Salisbury  has a famously beautiful cathedral & is the county city for Wiltshire
The original iron age site for the cathedral  at Old Sarum is close by as are  the Neolithic sites of Stonehenge and Avebury .

Salisbury C14th cathedral  is famed not just for its great age & beauty but also its famously tall 404 foot spire.  The old town has five gateways giving access  by the High Street Gate, St Ann's Gate,  Queen's Gate, and St Nicholas's Gate.

Thomas Pomery  Year 1635 Record  Census Place

A 1635 census of Salisbury shows one Thomas Pomeroy, with 2 small children, living in Gigant Street, St Martin in Salisbury
Gigant Street - the local MP John Bayley a prosperous merchant  owned houses in Gygant Street, Brown Street  & Dragon Street in Salisbury as well as the nearby farm of Bishop’s Down and the manor of Combe.
The street  still exists but the old C14th  houses are gone, demolished in a C20th redevelopment.
In the same  census , in an adjacent street, Ivey or Ivy Street,  was a widowed Joan Pomeroy , a pauper, who received 6d in alms. Was she perhaps his mother ?

There is no indication of status of the dwellings in this transcription but like all towns ands cities crammed with people  and poverty  with alleys, courtyards and narrow lanes leading running through them;   poverty ruled & they were pretty grim.
