SOUTHWARK

Southwark 1500-1800

In the 16th and 17th centuries Southwark continued to thrive. The London councillors were puritans who disapproved of plays so theatres were built in Southwark.

The Rose Theatre was built in 1592 and the Globe was built in 1599. Southwark was also known for bull baiting and bear baiting. (The unfortunate bear or bull was chained to a post and dogs were trained to attack it).

However Southwark suffered several outbreaks of plague in 1577-78, 1603, 1625, 1635-36, 1637, 1641 and in 1665. Fortunately the outbreak in 1665, the Great Plague, was the last.

In 1676 10 years after the Great Fire of London Southwark suffered a fire which destroyed hundreds of buildings. The great Fire of Southwark began on 26 May 1676 in a building where a man sold oil and paint. The fire spread quickly and it was only brought under control by blowing up houses to create fire breaks. However the burned parts of Southwark were soon rebuilt.

The death toll is not known but it is believed that more people died in the Great Fire of Southwark than in the Great Fire of London.

Until 1750 there was only one bridge over the Thames (London Bridge) so any traffic to and from the Southeast of England had to go through Southwark.

Guy's Hospital was founded in 1721 by Thomas Guy who was governor of St Thomas's Hospital.

St John Horsleydown Southwark was a small parish on the south bank of the River Thames in London, opposite the Tower of London.

The name Horsleydown, apparently derived from the "horse lie-down" by the river. The parish was created by splitting St Olave's parish in 1733.

this was probably Ayliff Street Whitechapel or a lane off it

Goodmans Fields From the 16th century, the open ground was divided into garden plots. It was bought by Sir John Leman, Lord Mayor of London, whose great-nephew William Leman laid out four streets, named after relatives - Mansell, Prescot, Ayliff and Leman.

John Strype in 1717 described them as fair streets of good brick houses, but by the end of the century most were replaced by Richard Leman and his builder Edward Hawkins: the area remained fashionable, until sugar blowing, and then warehouses, encroached.

Charles Pomroy Occupation Heel Maker of St Mary Whitechapel Marriage 5 Mar 1727 to Vezy Sully of St Mary Whitechapel- Clandestine Marriage at the Fleet

Fleet register. Officiating Minister: Evans. Jul 1719 - Mar 1730. Index: alphabetically arranged under the man's forename. Includes a few baptisms Aug 1724 - June 1729.

"Clandestine" marriages were those that had an element of secrecy to them: perhaps they took place away from a home parish, and without either banns or marriage licence. It is often asserted, mistakenly, that under English law, a marriage could be recognized as valid if each spouse had simply expressed (to each other) an unconditional consent to their marriage.

These "common-law marriages" as they might be termed today were the exception. Nearly all marriages in England, including the "irregular" and "clandestine" ones, were performed by ordained clergy

The Marriage Duty Act 1695 put an end to irregular marriages at parochial churches by penalizing clergymen who married couples without banns or licence. By a legal quirk, however, clergymen operating in the Fleet could not effectively be proceeded against, and the clandestine marriage business there carried on. In the 1740s, over half of all London weddings were taking place in the environs of the Fleet Prison. The majority of Fleet marriages were for honest purposes, when couples simply wanted to get married quickly or at low cost
