19th Century POOR POMEROYS
19th century Removal Orders were often harsh.

Walkhampton Consols, also known as Wheal Rose, a small copper mine in Walkhampton, was last worked in about 1860. Remains of the mine can be seen to the north of the Horrabridge - Walkhampton road and parts of the leat which formerly brought water from the brook just below Knowle Farm, are still traceable.
Ann Pomery, a widowed Pauper in 1841. Removal order

A Tale of Poverty
Presumably as mine production in one place declined mine workers were forced to seek other work
In this case in Tavistock, the Stannary town where her husband died around the time their second child was born. The widowed Ann was left without an income with a child and a baby to provide for. So she walked the 3 miles to Sheepstor where they were married, presumably seek help from her family there& where the parish turfed her out and sent her back to Walkhampton.

Wheal George or East Wheal George Copper Mine, located a short distance donwstream of Huckworthy Bridge, Walkhampton
The existence of high quality ores near the surface on Dartmoor led the miners to believe that even better ore existed deeper down.
However the history of the mine suggests that this is not the case and the mineralisation becomes patchy at depth.Between the years 1822 and 1831 a total of about 276 tons of white tin , worth almost £30,000, was "coyned" recorded and taxed, at Tavistock the nearest stannary town.
The mine's most productive year was 1825, when 403 blocks of tin weighing over 1,220 cwt in total were coyned.
The mine apparently operated unsuccessfully on a small scale for the next few years while the price of tin fell again.
In August 1838 the shares on which £3. 10s had been paid were worth only £2.
By early 1840 the shares, by then fully paid-up were worth just £1.[15] By 1841 only three or four men were employed and in 1844, with the price of tin at an all-time low of just over £60 per ton, the mine closed.[16]

Children were apprenticed sometimes far away from home, and usually between the ages of 7 and 10.
An apprenticeship was a significant undertaking and often cost the father a sum equivalent to a year's wages. Once the apprenticeship was served the man became first a freeman of his trade and when he had completed his 'masterpiece' provided it was judged good enough by the masters of that trade, he became a master, with all the added social status that implied. On the other hand farm servants apprenticeships seem to have been a means of getting free labour.
They got no education and clothing was not provided but they were fed and housed, often in the farm house sleeping 4 to a bed, boys in one room, girls in another. W.G. Hoskins gives several reports about the plight of such apprentices in his booklet 'Old Devon'

Walkhampton Church House was built Circa early C16, modified in 1698, altered in late C19 and restored in later C20.It is thought these were originally built to accommodate the men who built the church and possibly to brew ale for the Lord of the Manor when the parish feasts were held. They go back as far as 12th century. The building was held in common by the tenants who would then pay a quarterly rent for the privilege of using it.More about it here
