The Mystery of William Pomeroy buried in St Ervan in 1622

William Pomeroy Esq who died St Ervan July 1622 whose WILL was lodged in Exeter was lost in WWII

IF he was brother to Ann Jenkyns nee Pomeroy’s he died age about 16 probably without children-

St Ervan is a tiny place in the depths of the Cornish countryside. It has a little ancient church in which is a memorial to William Pomeroy who died in July 1622. Around the memorial are the words

Here lieth the body of William Pomeroy Esquire -
the third day of July 1622. Underneath are the words -" Memento morte".

He wears a doublet and a lacy collar with balloon breeches with a skull at his feet - The arms shown are those of the Pomeroys. He looks more like a boy or young man than an older man and his hair cut 'pudding basin' style rather than a scull cap. There is also a rose which Alma LaFrance discovered indicates condolance

'ROSE: condolence, sorrow; the brevity of earthly existence; of English descent incited by the Tudor Rose. Often indicates how old the person was at the time of death: This one is in full bloom suggesting he was over 14 -

Just a bud - normally a child 12 or under; Partial bloom - normally a teenager - Full bloom - normally in early/mid twenties. The deceased died in the prime of life '.There are also what appear to be oak leaves and 'Oak leaves are seen on Military tombs'

Did William die at St Ervan in 1622 age 16 - parish records do not confirm this -

The memorial has a clearly undifferentiated Pomeroy shield.

It looks like a memorial to a young man, rather than an older one, in which case William died age 16. BUT why was he in St Ervan?

or was this William Pomeroy husband of Mary Bevill ?

D this William marry ? They married at 15 or less in those times.

Was his wife Elizabeth who died 1620 & was buried in Newton Ferrers , before him ?

or was Elizabeth a 2nd wife to grandfather William. and the mother of the babies born 1601 & 1607

I found entries in the images of parish record in FMP-

They cannot be the children of William born 1606

So the mystery is not conclusively solved

There were 3 William Pomoroys in the Collaton Manor family

William who married Mary Bevill , born in the 1570's,

one of six or possibly 7 children of Andrew Pomeroy senior & his Welsh wife Anne Matthew,

OR. He might be William & Mary's son, William born 29 March 1607 , not recorded by Visitations but the recently found (2015) in Newton Ferrers parish records

or was he William, grandson of William, born 1606 son of Andrew Pomeroy junior & Jane Hext

mentioned in records as his fathers heir in 1617, aged 14 in 1620

WILLIAM POMEROY ESQ. 1622 ST ERVAN

The will of William Pomeroy buried at St Ervan was discovered to have been destroyed in the bombing of Exeter 1942.

Which suggests he was not only old enough to have made a Will but also had something to leave ... If he had inherited property and gone to war he would have made a will.

In a printed volume Calendar of Wills and Administration In the Consistory Court of the Bishop of Exeter 1532-1800 (published in 1914) there is listed a Will of William Pomeroy of St Ervan (No.323).

Mentioned in a registry record of 1933 but apparently did not surviving the 1942 bombing of Exeter.

St Ervan in the registration district of BODMIN. It is tucked away almost at the end of a lane which leads only to a 13th Century mill, surrounded by its Churchtown, with Victorian Rectory and School house, older Kiddly Wink (which means selling ale and spirits) and Glebe Farm. An early baptismal well lies to the right of the lane below the church and a possible Holy Well on the left.

The Church was never altered in the 15th Century, and remains a fine example of an early cruciform building.

St Ervan is situated in the Deanery and Hundred of Pydar. It is bounded on the North by St Merryn and Padstow, on the East by St Petroc Minor (now known as Little Petherick) and St Columb Major, on the South by Mawgan in Pydar, and on the West by St Eval.

The parish of St Ervan is located near the North coast of Cornwall, about three miles South-West of Padstow. Besides the Churchtown, the villages in the parish are: Rumford and Penrose.

"Surrender of previous lease...." AMF observes ...Interesting note to remember: This record ties North Petherwin Pomeroy to Penroose, in St Ervan, Cornwall. North Petherwin was Ingsdon branch. John Jr M. 1658, Margaret Drinnick. He had 3 sons: Richard, 1676, Thomas, 1681, and Nicholas who was buried 1686 in N. Petherwin. No further record for sons Richard or Thomas in North Petherwin.

Mary was co- heir with sister Joane b circa 1582-88 married John Hore of Trenouth in St Ervan on 10 Aug 1618 at St Kew....so these were still land owning gentry.

Trekyning / Trekenning ( a caravan site in 2010!) was for 2 decades the seat of the Jenkyns. James Jenkyn gent was an attorney at arms whose father a miller and by dint of ‘ inferior practice of law ‘

James Jenkyn had a considerable estate the time of by James I 1603-= History of Cornwall for St Columb Major records that James Jenkyn married to a Carter, widow of a Brabyn- it was their son was Peter Jenkyn who married Anne Pomeroy 1623

ST COLUMB MAJOR

The principal villages in the parish are: Glivian, Halloon, Lanhizey, Rosedinick, Rosevanion, Ruthvoes (or Ruthvos), Tolskedy, Tregamere, Tregaswith, Tregatilian, Trekenning, Trebadannon, Trevarron, Trevolgas and Trugo.

In the time of Edward VI (1547-1553) when Thomas and Hugh Pomeroy were buying up chantry lands. Those of St Columb major were sold to Sir Hugh of Tregony and his brother Thomas Esq. They in time sold it in 1551 to William Saplyn who sold it on in 1553-4 to the trustees of parish of St Columb Major; John Glyn, Jon Gahergan, William Pyre, John Maifield Rich, Rich'd Carter, Henry Rowse, John Vivian and Rich'd Hancanon.

John Vivian married Mary Cavill dau Jane Pomeroy and William Cavil of St Kew. Mary was his 2nd wife married 12 July 1571. Jane was daughter of William Pomeroy & Anne Bevill and sister to Andrew Pomeroy junior

St Columb Major- Bonython, Jenkyn ,Vivian, Leigh were the most significant families with manor houses and lands in the Parish of St Columb major and St Kew some 5 miles away.

Bere Family

A great estate of the Bere family possibly related to a family of the same name who had great wealth and account in Henry VIII days.

Treravall went to daughter and heiress of John Bevill Sheriff of Cornwall in 16th of Eliz- 1674 - at that time his estates much impaired by the daughter of his elder brother.

remember the grandmother of Mary Beville who married William Pomeroy of Collaton was a Phillipa Bere married to Peter Bevill in 1492

The Bere family lived in St Ervan and two members, George Bere senior and junior, served consecutively as steward of the Arundell estates in Cornwall in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. It is unclear at what date George Bere junior succeeded his father. He had probably done so by 1698 at which date George Bere senior was still alive as his son is referred to as 'the younger' (AR/34/7).

George Bere junior died in 1720 (AR/34/12; cf. AR/50/11) having served four generations of the Arundells. The bulk of the estate correspondence from the late 1600s until 1720 is either to or from him. This estate correspondence, includes letters to and from other members of the Bere family in London and Devon (See note to AR/10 under The Arrangement of the Archive)

Trerovell in St Ervan came into the hands of the Bere family as early as 1284 (Cornwall Feet of Fines, I, no. 289; AR/1/951) and the Trerovell deeds in the archive (AR/1/949 - 960) seem to be present because of the 17th - 18th century connection between the Beres and the Arundells. There is no evidence that Trerovell was ever an Arundell property. Similarly there are several 18th century documents about lands in Newlyn in Paul, often connected with the Beres, although there are also instances of the Arundells receiving rent from these properties. It is possible that the Arundells bought these tenements from the Beres or administered them on their behalf for a short while.

Andrew Pomeroy Junior was living in/ of St Columb Major by 1620 evidently having moved from Newton Ferrers & Collaton just before that because he signed the parish register there in 1619

His daughter Ann was born 1608 was married to Peter Jenkins* in St Columb Major who died 19th Sept 1663 , Ann died in 1682.

His sister Mary Pomeroy Married William Leigh. son Richard Leigh B about 1569 married in St Collumb Major 09 NOV 1601 to Eleanor Bonython B about 1565.

These Bonython sisters were co- heirs Elizabeth Bonython married Henry Pomeroy of Tregony in 1601 in St Columb Major.

The Leigh connection could well be of the family that married Mary Pomeroy in circa 1570

MANORS AND FAMILY ESTATES IN THE PARISH OF ST. COLUMB.

Bosworgy, which in some old records is deemed a manor, and distinguished by variations in its name, belonged for several generations to the ancient family of Bottreaux, who are said to have had a grant of holding an annual fair at this place for two days at the festival of St. Mary Magdalen. But of this fair nothing is known but from ancient records. Hals observes, that in his days some ruins of an old chapel and cemetery were extant on this estate, and that Bosworgy had been for four or five descents in the family of Keate.

When the branches of this family became extinct in Cornwall, it passed to Sir Jonathan Keate of the Hoc in Hertfordshire.

The manor of Denzell, which from St, Columb extends into several adjoining parishes, and also the manor of Glivian in St. Columb, belong to the Vyvyan family, who have long had two seats in this parish called IVenowtb and Trewan ;

they were originally of Trenowth, which is at present a farm house. The heiress of Trenowth married Denzell, of whose representatives the Vyvyans purchased.

The heiress of Vyvyan of Trenowth and Coswarth, brought these estates to the Vyvyan family of Trelowarren ; since which time Trewan has been the seat of a younger branch of that &mily. On the death of the late Thomas Vyvyan, Esq. in 1812, these estates passed to Richard Vyvyan, Esq. late of Annery House, Devon, who now resides at Trewan.
