The settlement was owned by Richard de Yerda in 1211 and remained in the Yard family until 1615. Richard Yard, 1450 - c1514 was probably responsible for the present house. Group value with North Yarde and with a farmyard of traditional farm buildings to the south. South Yarde is an outstanding building. The medieval roof is a remarkable survival and the unfinished state of its carved decoration provides important evidence of the methods of a late medieval carver.
The late C16/early C17 remodelling is also fine and the house has not suffered from any damaging alterations this century while in the hands of the Rolle family.
The method of carving on the east end hall truss is described by A.W. Everett in a letter to the owner, dated 10/4/63 which is partly quoted by Charles Hulland in his account of the house in the Transactions of the Devonshire Association

AML:(April 4 2024) Returned to this archive several times, each time for different purposes, and each time noted surnames associated with the POMEROY names: Hannaford and Norroway (Northway); also Richard Woolcomb.(Bickington) who married Jane, daughter of Thomas POMEROY of Ingsdon a couple of generations later.
Note: A Joan Northway was the mother of Agnes Copplestone, and therefore maternal grandmother of Thomas POMEROY, of Bickington (Ingsdon branch)
Note: There were several Hannaford/Pomeroy marriages into the Ingsdon branch.
While the Pomeroys noted as being “in mercy," the other names have relevance.
Note: At Campton, in Marldon there is on record Robert Pomeroy whose son married the daughter of the deceased Lord of Waddeton.
Given the connections of other families in this Waddeton collection to members of the Ingsdon Branch, it seems probable that the Robert Pomeroy is the same Robert Pomeroy who married Elizabeth Beaumont.

As one goes up the hill from the riverside in Stoke Gabrel, on Paignton Road ,one passes is Old Stoke Farm then Yardes Farm. Satellite shows a large patch of ground around theses two now separate properties.
Its possible that these were once jointly called Yarde & consisted a main house, which is still called Yarde, & an adjacent farmyard & stables, now called Old Stoke Farm which has C19th additions
Yarde is listed as a GV II C 17th House, formerly a farmhouse
Wall Farm identifiable by layout & now called Higher Wall FARM caravan park .
Below - Yards is just above Stoke House on the little lane & Stoke House is a grade II listed. detached house circa early C18th & with Yards adjacent. & in likelihood they once a single entity,
By their layout Id say Yards was the residence / manor house & Stoke was the large farm with stables and dairy next door

Remember George Lane?
While some of these surnames suggest a connection to some of the Ingsdon Pomeroy's, it seems logical to me to examine other records in light of the appearance of GEORGE LANE in the Waddeton Manor papers.
Johane Chidley of Strowd, Dorset mentions the children of George Lane of Berry POMEROY in her will. Because she resided in the immediate area of a John Pomeroy, esq., who puzzled Powley as well as ourselves (Bowood at Netherbury, Dorset), and because Johane Chidley mentioned GEORGE LANE "of Berry Pomeroy," in her will, and because there were Ingsdon Pomeroy connections to the Waddeton Manor, it seems logical to take a new look at Johane Chidley.
If I can figure out how, I'll put Johane Chidleys information in a side bar.

Joan Wylles married Roger Pomeroy in about 1650/ was daughter of Elias Wylles & his wife Joan who had married in 1616 at St Germans ,Some confusion of her name Wylles or Wyvell - Elias died in 1625 when his daughter Joan was around 7 or 8 years old, making her about 10 in 1628 when her mother married Thomas Wyvell . She may have been known as both Joan Willis & Joan Wyvell or possibly she took her stepfathers name.
