Researching - Joanna Chudleigh whose 2nd marriage was to Phillip de Bryan , I realised she might have lived at one of the de Bryan properties at either Torbryan near Newton Abbot or at Pool Barton near Slapton, close to Stokenham. at Torcross
This lady was 1st married into a notable Cornish family, St Aubyn, and then the 2nd son ofthe de Bryan's, a very wealthy Dorset family. After just a year her 2nd husband died, in France, and a 10 months later she married for a 3rd time. Thomas Pomeroy was an ambitious, but possible penurious, Esquire from a lesser branch of the Baronial family. By marrying within a year she forfited her deBryan dower properties.
As was the custom she wou.d be housed where it was expedient for others, even as a widow she had little say & since she was evidently not pregnant , she would probably have been the problem for the father of Phillip, her late husband,. He was Sir Guy, a Knight of the Garter, an extremely influential man who was a personal friend of the King, Richard II ; but it might have been a decision of the King because she was the co-heir to the barony of Beri . She might have been sent to live at Berry Pomeroy Manor, which was not her home nor was it that of Thomas Pomeroy Esq., at that time. , it was the main residence of the Pomeroy barony. Her co=heir was her sister Margaret, who was married to Adam Cole, whose son was John Cole was a companion of Thomas Pomroy Esq of Smallbridge & Upottery.
Phillipa de Bryan was granted about 1373 interest in Torbryan, to the rectory of which she presented in 1374. She resided there with her third husband, Sir John Chandos, who presented to the rectory in 1405
Sir Guy de Bryan senior KG was presented to Torbryan Rectory in 1353,1 but apparently never resided in that parish. He had a residence at Pool in Slapton and another at Woodsford in Dorset. Between 1377 and 1387 he made large grants to Slapton Priory, including the advowsons of Loddiswell, acquired by him in 1381, and Poundstock.
