KELLOWAY

Thomas Pomeroy, was 3rd son of Henry Pomeroy, Esq  of Ingsdon by his 1st wife  Anne Raleigh
Sir Thomas , knighted with his brother Richard at the 1487  Coronation of  Elizabeth of York, queen to Henry Tudor,
He married Agnes Kelloway, the granddaughter of his father's 2nd wife, Anna Cammel  widow of Barrett &  Gylle .
They inherited Bowden House near Totnes from  Baron Henry Pomeroy who died in 1487
Henry got Bowden when he married   his 2nd wife Anne Camell Barrett, who was widow of Thomas Gylle, & had died in 1481.

Sir Thomas died in 1493  . His widow Agnes Kelloway then became  Lady Bowrying  when she married the  successful lawyer Sir Thomas Bowring of Bowringsleigh
The family moved to Ireland because  Bowring was sent to Ireland as Lord Chief Justice in about 1494 .
Agnes named her "son and heir" as Richard Pomeroy  age 26 years  in her 1519  Will born about  1482  he married Eleanor Coker.
They had Bowden House  until Richard  lived in the the property until after his 2nd marriage in 1544 when he sold it the John GILL of Totnes
Richard & Elenor Pomeroy  had 2 sons Henry &  John
Henry  b 1492  at Bowden House later  married Agnes Huckmore
They had  sons Richard, Thomas, & William Pomeroy,
William son of Henry Pomeroy and Agnes Huckmore we found a single record of him in 1581 purchasing woodland in Exminster

2023  research by ALM & AJP has revealed that there may well have been a Henry Pomeroy in the household of Sir Thomas Pomeroy & Agnes Kelloway.

Henry was a half brother of Sir Thomas Pomeroy (d 1493) & his brothers, Sir St Clere (died age about 30 in1471) & Sir Richard died 1496 . This much younger Henry was the product of their father Henry's marriage to his 2nd wife, Anna Camell, widow  William Barrett ( Visitations got that wrong) & widow of the successful Dartmouth merchant Thomas Gylle. Anna was mother of Joanna Barret who married William Kelloway & whose daughter Agnes became wife of Sir Thomas Pomeroy.  Her son Henry was born about 1481 & his mother may have died at his birth, his father died 6 years later in 1487.

William Kelloway of Sherborne Dorset married  Joanna Barret , dau Henry Barret of Whitparish, Wilts,by his wife Anna Cammell dau Robert Cammel of Tittleford Dorset. (Anna Cammel 2nd husband was Henry Pomeray before 1478 he died 1841 she died 1847 )

William Kelloway and wife  Joanna Barret  had daughter Agnes who mar Thomas Pomeroy. John Kelloway father of William died 1478, leaving lands in Cheriton Fitzpaine to Agnes and Thomas Pomero

DEVON

At the same time Philip was referred to in Gloucestershire and Wiltshire, Nichol/Nicholas de Chaillocia/Cailloe appears. By that time it appears he held Muxbere/Mokesbeare in Devon.

It seems likely that he was a brother of one of the Philips. Possibly as William de Caillewey he held the Wiltshire manor earlier, but by 1238, as William Cailleway, he was in Devon.

Mokesbeare, also connected to the Earl of Gloucester, was later confirmed to have a close family relationship with the Wiltshire/Gloucester branch. Family members at Wellington, Somerset, about this time, are presumed to have come from Mokesbeare.

Philip, said to be a ìyounger sonî of William, had gone to Stafford Barton in Dolton, Devon., somewhere about 1270. There is now evidence that the family was well established around Dowland, St Giles in the Wood, Roborough and Broadwoodkelly, about the same time.

The Devon family, later known as Stowford and Stafford, became the better recorded in later Heraldic Pedigrees.

It is now thought that the Kell(e)y family of Devon, said to have lived continuously in the same location since the time of Henry II, when Nicholas held Mokesbeare, may also be related.

The manor of Muxbear, or Mokesbeare, belonged so early as the reign of Henry II. to the family of Kelloway. After twelve descents it passed by sale to Richard Calmady, great uncle of Sir Shilston Calmady, who possessed it in Sir William Pole's time. In 1678 William Shere and his wife were possessed of this manor: after some intermediate alienations, it was purchased, in the early part of the last century, by the ancestor of R. H. Clarke, Esq., the present proprietor. Mr. Clarke possesses also an estate called Sealake, which belonged anciently to a family of that name, and afterwards to the Giffards.

HALBERTON is a large village, 3 miles E. of Tiverton, near the Grand Western Canal, and 1Ω mile W. of the junction of the Tiverton branch with the Bristol and Exeter Railway. Its parish contains 1739 inhabitants, and about 7600 acres of land, including the hamlets of Brethem-Bottom, Seckerleigh, Muxbeare, Ash, and many scattered houses.

Earl Powlett is lord of the manor of Halberton-Dean or Lower Town, which he holds on lease under the Dean and Chapter of Bristol.

The manor of Halberton Boys, formerly held by the Boys and other families, was purchased in 1808, by Richard Hall Clarke, Esq., of Bridwell House . . . The manor of Morston belongs to the countess of Egremont. Mount Stephen is the seat of George Wood, Esq., and Halberton Court is the residence of Thomas Webber, Esq. The other principal owners of land in this large parish are the Rev. J. Pitman, Capt Adney, W. Nation, Esq., G. Pearce, Esq., Rev. J. Spurway, and Capt. Cphr. Laroche. . . . The Church (St. Andrew,) is a handsome structure, of the 14th century, with a tower and five bells. . . . Here is an old Wesleyan Chapel, and a Farmer's Club. . . ." From The History of Parliament: the House of Commons 1509-1558, ed. S.T. Bindoff, 1982
"...Keilway was one of the richer citizens of Salisbury, being assessed for the subsidy of 1524 on goods worth £150. On the conclusion of his mayoralty in 1516 he was paid £22 12s.8½d. for his pension and allowances, and in the following year he held the key of the ‘nether lock’ while the mayor, John Abarough, held that of the ‘over lock’, and on 6 Mar 1523, the day of his return to Parliament, he was also entrusted with the key to a door in the council house previously held by Richard Bartholomew. On 11 Sep 1523, Keilway and his colleague Abarough delivered a writ to the city ‘for the levying of £25 8s. for the burgesses’ expenses’ for 127 days at the rate of 2s. a day each. The last reference found to Keilway is as a member of the Twenty-Four on 5 Oct 1537. ..."
