LEWANNICK
This is my twig on the Pomeroy Tree. Village website Here
Lewannick has been a settlement for millennia. a small hilltop village centred around a crossroads with evidence of early habitation. Two inscribed pillar stones, each having writing in both Latin and Ogham characters; which tell us they date from between the C5th & C6th .
One is located in the village churchyard, & dedicated to a “Ingenuus” & the other, in the church nave, mentions “Ulcagnus”.
This was the border country when the invading Saxons began to drive the indigenous Britons west
The Domesday Book mentions settlements within the parish at Trelaske, Trewanta, Trevell and Polyphant which was held by Count Robert of Mortain as Tenant in Chief ;
The principal villages in this parish, besides the church town, are Hicks Mill (Hix-Mill), Polyphant (Pollyfont), Plusha (Plashes Cross), Trenhorne, and Trevadlock. It is bounded on the north by Parishes of Trewen and South Petherwin, on the east by Lezant, on the south by North Hill and on the west by AltarnunThe land is hilly with a mixture of rich loam and sandy valley bottoms which gives is in pasture to the rearing of cattle At Polyfont soapstone has been quarried there save Norman times. It fine freestone which is a rich green colour with black veins was used for mantelpieces and ornamental work. There are several other quarries there producing good building stone & one producing exceedingly hard slate.
Lewannick is 5 miles from Werrington where my 3 x great father Richard was born in 1781, the youngest in a family of 8 children born to John Pomeroy & his wifves Elizabeth Williams & 2nd wife Elizabeth Evens - Pomeroy family #515

The Pomeroy families in the Lewannick area may have been Yeoman but it is just as likely they were agricultural workers & farm servants working on the farms of local manor estate
