1291  & FIVE SONs

The five sons of Sir Henry Pomeroy & his first wife Johanna Moels

1291 -1367

A tale medieval knights service , intermingled with skulduggery

Henry Pomeroy born at the castle of Tregony was son of the 7th successive Sir Henry Pomeroy of Berry Pomeroy & his wife Lady Amica de Camville.

When Henry was about 7 years old, as was customary, he would have been placed in the household of a family of similar rank, possibly as ward of Sir John Moels, feudal baron of North Cadbury in Somerset.
A boy as young as 11would have gone to war in the retinue of his 'foster father' the knight. As his  squire, which was an apprentice knight. ( see  end of page chart), he might serve dinner to his knight, look after his horse, polish his armour, run errands and do everything needed to get ready for battle.

Young Henry was 14 when his father died on 27th September 1305 & he inherited the barony of Berry Pomeroy , with its lands and properties & responsibilities
At the age of 18 his marriage to Lady Johanna Moels was arranged. They went on to have at least 5 sons between about 1323 & 1335. 2023 we now believe there may have been a 6th son, Richard
Henry he heir, 2nd son William, 3rd son John, 4th son Nicholas & 5th son & most notable Thomas. They may also have had daughters however  when you had 5 or 6 sons, a daughter or two was largely insignificant .

According to Visitations 8th Henry died 1367

Sir John de Moels,
1st Baron Moels
(1269–20 May 1310)
feudal baron of a moiety of North Cadbury, Somerset.

From 1296 to 1309  Sir John received various summonses from the Crown for military service against the Scots and in Flanders. He was summoned to attend  Edward I at Salisbury 24 February 1296/7& to a military council at Rochester 8 September 1297.

The son of the 8th Henry' Pomeroy became the 9th of the name and he was at the battle of Crecy in Normandy on August 26 1346, during the Hundred Years’ War (1337-1453). The English army under King Edward III (1312-77) annihilated a French force under King Philip VI (1293-1350)

The battle  which saw an early use of the deadly longbow by the English;
a battle that is regarded as one of the most decisive English history..

The 9th Sir Henry Pomeroy  (by 1308?-1373)  served in the retinue of John de Vere, earl of Oxford, as one of the commanders of the Black Prince's division at Crecy. 1346.  "cavelier" is a word Powley uses for him.   Note: Each "Man At Arms, " whether he was a Knight, or Armiger/Esquire, brought  3 Archers (Valets) with them.  Commanders would have up to 25 Knights or Armiger/Esquires in their retinue with dozens of retainers and servants to service them.

By the age of 18  his son  Henry had obtained a licence from the king to entail his manors on himself and his wife, Emmot , for life, with the remainder of their estates and properties going  by succession to their sons,  Henry, William, Nicholas , John & Thomas.

This single mention of his wife gives no  clue as to her parentage

BY 1372 Sir Thomas Pomeroy ( 5th and youngest son of Sir Henry by his first wife Johanna Moels ) and his wife Johane had a son William Pomeroy.

Since Edward son of Thomas was the "heir male of the body" after John, his cousin, died, the William mentioned in the document must have died. However, that doesn't mean Thomas of la Pomeray didn't have other children after Edward.

As a soldier he would have spent long periods away from home thereby reducing the frequency of the appearance of children.

Stoke Gabriel  includes Aish, Watton, and Portbridge. You mention this is connection to Henry alias Mortimer

The fact that the property in both Wyll (Lower Well, Stoke Gabriel) and Eggesford remained with the Pomeroy's into the 18th century suggests they may be the grandchildren of a daughter of the house of de la Pomeray.

About a mile from Berry Pomeroy village and not far from Stoke Gabriel  is Longcombe and close by Lomentor Copse is small wood. Longcombe was part of the  barony of Berry Pomeroy -

Henry’s wife Johanna de Mules went before a church tribunal and swear to the parentage of her son Henry the heir was Henry’ son and that is noted in Henry the son’s visitations entry  ‘named as Joan Moels son in  a deed of 1369

WHEN _ ??   I wonder when and why  ??????? I wonder if  the child was born when Henry was away for a lengthy period fighting -or was it a formality that they had to go through ? .

Sir Henry Pomeroy  (by 1308?-1373)  served in the retinue of John de Veer, earl of Oxford, as one of the commanders of the Black Prince's division at Crecy. 1346.  Survived and  died 1367

Visitations say Henry married again after Joan died – presented at the church of Whitston in Devon in right of his wife Elizabeth (Courtenay) of Powderham  on 16 April 1359

Whitstone is just under 3 miles from Exeter the manor was anciently held by the Beaumont, Powderham, and Bohun families.  Makes sense -

I think I read somewhere that the one reason for a year time lapse was so that any child conceived immediately before the husband’s death could be sure of being that father’s issue ; inheritance stuff. – and of course if a widow married again that allowed for any issue of  the new husband’s being his  not someone else’s passed off as his…!

There is a Nicholas Pomeroy  in Bishop Grandisons notes   a young cleric in Cornwall,  somewhere, he  went home when his father died. Grandison waited a while to replace Nicholas. . Maybe he was in a place he didn’t like!

I thought it might  account for his absence in the battle list of 1372 etc  but  Henry died 1367 so maybe Nicholas just didn’t like Cornwall !

2014 Notes

JOHN Cleric, father of Nicholas, son of Amicia and Henry, died 1358...the testament by Amicia was given in 1337...shortly before she died, actually.

John, 2nd son of Amicia, was a cleric. In 1314 he was collated at  Letcomb Bassett, in Sarum. In 1318 he was transferred to Exeter.

1358: Sir Reginald de Sánelo R Autloh priest of St Just in Penwith was Collated at Chudleigh 20 April to the Prebend Which had been held by Nicholas de Pomerey and was vacant by the leave given to  Nicholas at the death of  his father Master John la Pomerey. "

Visitations had a John as 2nd of the 5 sons of Henry & Moels  and when we were looking at them we John had a son thought Nicholas  prebend of Glasney -  the suggestion now is that he was a generation earlier, possibly a son of  Amica & Henry

sons of Henry and Moels were between about 1325 until 1359 when Elizabeth was known to be Henry's 2nd wife .

Date: 2 EDWARD III.1327+2 = 1329

Medieval Warriors After 1422 there are no more Pomeroy's listed in any of the musters, although the rolls are complete to 1443.

After the death of Sir John in 1416  the ambitious Sir Thomas held the title until his death, without heirs,  in 1426.

Thomas Pomeroy  son of the cadet line of  Robert of Smallbridge was a Kings Knight  and appears to have led a busy & colourful life

In 1416 using his favour with King Henry IV, and by marrying Joanna Chudleigh the heiress daughter of Sir John, son of Henry,Thomas was able to wrest  the title from the declared heir Edward son of 5th son Thomas.

1388: Thomas Pomeray married Joan Chudleigh, daughter of one of the co-heiresses of Sir John de la Pomeroy of Berry Pomeroy. He married her without the licence orpermission from the king, Henry IV. and he and the priest were reprimanded for this and forgiven shortly afterward.  Shortly after his marriage he entered into a recognizance before the mayor of the Staple of Westminster in September 1388 for the sum of £83 10s.8d., and when payment became overdue and Chancery issued a writ to value his property in Somerset, Oxfordshire, Dorset and Devon. It was found that income from the St. Aubyn manor of Alston Sutton, which was worth 12 marks a year, and a rent of ten marks from Frome would help pay off the debt.

St Aubyn was the first husband of his wife Joan Chudleigh daughter of Sir James Chudleigh & Joanna Pomeroy ,

her 2nd husband Phillip de Bryan of Sutton Poyntz,

&3rd and final spouse was Thomas Pomeroy.

1389: Thomas Pomeray,  Serving under the  Earl of Arundel, Richard Fitz Alans command: At Brest Garrison. 1 year.

1390: 26/06: London: Pardon of outlawry to Thomas Pomeray [of Berry Pomeroy] for non-appearance to answer Simon Doser and Henry Pountfreyt, citizens and saddlers of London, for a debt of 20 marks. [CPR 1388-92, 280]

1391: Thomas and Joan de la Pomeray obtained license to hear mass in any oratories upon their estates within the diocese.

1392: Feb 13th: Thomas de la Pomeray, Esquire: went to war under command of Earl of Huntington, John Holland: 1 year at Brest Castle and Town.As an esquire, Thomas would bring with him three Archers.

1395, Feb 10: Thomas de la Pomeray, Esquire, went off to war again under Duke of Lancaster, John of Gaunt, 1 year, Acquitaine

In July that year : Powley P 64:writes 'Because he had tarried on his affairs, Thomas incurred a revocation of an almost six months’ old protection for a year to travel to Acquitaine with the King’s uncle, John, duke of Lancaster.

1396:  Feb 10th: Thomas de la Pomeray, Esquire: again went to war as a “Man At Arms,” under Duke of Lancaster, John of Gaunt: 1 Year Gascony

1397: received a pardon for sums owed certain citizens of London, a draper, tailor and armourer. King Henry IV acceded in September 1399. He was the son of John of Gaunt, with whom Thomas de la Pomeray had served for the past five years.

1400, Feb 22: Thomas de la Pomerai was allocated the manor of Oakford, late of John of Salisbury, deceased, from the time of forfeiture by the said John,  for 8 years.

1400: March:  Made the King’s esquire;  and by December of that year was The King’s Knight. (Powley, page 64..says the King had knighted him at his last voyage to Scotland. He was given a grant for life of William Hasthorpe’s land in Hemyock. Thomas de la Pomerai gave good service in Scotland and Wales between 1400 and 1402.

1400: 24 Nov: Receive the shrievalty of Devonshire. He fell into arrears and was jailed.

1402: Jan 18: Calendar of Close Rolls  Henry IV, volume 1. Westminster: To the sheriff of Devon for the time being. Order to pay to Thomas Pomeroy, the king’s knight 10/. a year for life and the arrears since 22 Mar Henry IV, on which date for good service the king granted him for life, by name of Thomas Pomeroy, esquire, 20/a. a year of the issues and profits of that county.

1402 March 4. Westminster. To the warden of the Flete prison. Order to set free Thomas Pomeray the king's knight, late sheriff of Devon, imprisoned by reason of £56. 13s. 4d. arrears in his account before the treasurer and the barons of the exchequer; as the king has pardoned him that sum, discharging and acquitting him thereof. By bill of the treasurer.

1402, October: de la Pomerai received pardon for Outlawry, for not appearing before the bench in Richard II’s reign to answer Giles Mallory, chevalier.

Thomas's income from his estates did not support his extravagant tastes and this encouraged him to increase his income from land, then in 1416, his great opportunity came.

Baron Sir John Pomeroy died without issue. Joan Chudleigh was co -heir  to the  title with her cousin John Cole  and held moieties of Stockleigh, Harberton and Brixham, and presumably alsoon the death of Sir John’s widow,( Johanna  Merton) a  share of Berry Pomeroy itself.

In 1404 Thomas de la Pomeray, Knight, was in Wales for the King and  whilst he was in Wales his property was “invaded” and papers taken by Courtney and Thomas's mother in law, Joanna Chudleigh, nee Pomeroy. who had married 1st James Chudleigh and after his death married John Courtenay . The outcome of this incident is not completely known but a settlement of 1414 declaring Edward Pomeroy to be heir to Berry was set aside by the Crown.  Sir Thomas Pomeroy, took the title by right of his wife  and John Cole of Nethway  (son of Margaret Pomeroy and Adam Cole) and the king confirmed the possession of the reversion.

1416 Sir John Pomeroy died without and heir of his body.

After that perhaps by dint of strong persuasion, Sir John’s widow Johanna Merton relinquished her life interest in the estate to these same two claimants a few months before her death in 1420. It is uncertain, however, whether Sir Thomas’s tactics succeeded at Tregony in Cornwall: there, he attempted to wrest the manor from Edward and his wife by making an assault on the manor-house and imprisoning and then ousting them.

The King’s Council intervened to prevent further damage and riot, and Edward apparently regained possession for a while but even so, after the death  of Sir Thomas’s wife in 1422, it was said that his widow held Tregony. He married a second time this time to Johanna Raleigh widow Whaleborough and in 1422 they went on a pilgramage to Rome.

These were the medieval knights of the Pomeroy family

Sir Henry Pomeroy   Between 1308?-1373  he served in the retinue of John de Vere, earl of Oxford, as one of the commanders of the Black Prince's division at Crecy. 1346. died1373

 His son,  John de la Pomerai ( born 1347 married 1404 died 1416.) was  active in the naval defensive of Devonshire against a landing from France in 1375;

(Noted as a Man At Arms on board a ship. Not a "mariner." )  Also served  with Edward III aboard  one of the naval ships in 1372.  Commissions of Array :1377. I wonder if his absence was the main reason for lack of living children.

His son Sir  John Pomeroy  married Joanna Merton had the barony next but he died in 1416 without issue, his heirs were the children of his sisters Johnanna Chudleigh and Margaret Cole; Johanna Chudleigh and John Cole.

William Pomeray, "esquire." Man-at-arms) 1369,  At Sea ( Brother of Thomas, above.)

William Pomeray, Esquire, Man At Arms, 1389, Brest Garrison 1 year. Also recorded as serving in North of France 1 year in 1422

There is a lot about  one particular William Pomeray under "Other Pomerays" in Powley: William Pomeray ; dead by 1441.

Powley says he has no reason to think that there was more than one William: he suggests  that most of the mentions of William Pomeroy, in this period, was of  one man: William Pomeroy of Devonshire.   Connected to Thomas de la Pomerai; Queen's "esquire," etc.

"Probably the mainpernor with John Cokesworthy, when Thomas de la Pomerai and John Cole received commitment, in 1419, of the dower of Joan, widow of John de la Pomerai, viz, one third of Stoklegh manor and parts of the Brixham and Harberton mioeties of the Pomeray estates.

Powley thought he was the William who had in 1417 given John Cole bonds that Thomas de la Pomerai would not hurt Edward de la Pomerai.

He was presented in 1421, letters patents, dated 1416, of the King's mother Joan, queen of England, granting for life,  "her esquire," 20 marks, annually, from yearly rent from Hedyngton manor and the hundred of Boleninden without the north gate of Oxford.

Had the "farm" of land in Hemyok, escheated to the King because of the lack of heirs to William de Hasthorp. Etc.

Nicholas  Pomeroy became a  Sheriff of Devon 1375- 1377. Also called Nicholas of Tewkesbury in records he seems to have been a merchant. Nicholas of Tewkesbury here

John Pomeray, "esquire," Man-at-arms) 1369. At sea.  He was father of the prebend Nicholas Pomeroy of  Glasney, the Collegiate College in Penryn Cornwall

In 1314,  John is in a record for  Letcomb Bassett...Sarum, in Berkshire  until 1318 and  died sometime before 1358, at which time  Nicholas was given leave at the death of Master John la Pomerey.

Latin to English translation Glasney, The collegiate Church: Prebends: Sir Reginald de b Sánelo Autloh R Priest of St Just in Penwith was collated at Chudleigh 1358 April 20 To The prebend  held by Nicholas la Pomerey, which was vacant by  the leave given Nicholas at the death of Master John la Pomerey.

A prebendary was one who received an income from church property.

Thomas Pomeray, (esquire),  the 5th son , Man-at-arms in 1369. He went on journey for the King possibly to Scotland or maybe to  Wales in 1372-

He was  married to Johan her family unknown, and by 1372 had a young son William. Before he left for the  war Thomas set his affairs in order so that his wife and his young son William were secure, his wife  may already have been pregnant with a second child at that time. Their son William is in the record of 1372 and married to an unknown wife circa 1390-95 & William's son, Edward was later the nominated heir of  head of the family  Sir John Pomeroy.

In 1372 the naval Battle of La Rochelle took place on 22 and 23 June  between a Castilian and French fleet commanded by the Genoese born Ambrosio Boccanegra and an English convoy commanded by John Hastings, 2nd Earl of Pembroke.   Edward III  had planned an important campaign in Aquitaine under the newly appointed lieutenant of the Duchy, the Earl of Pembroke who was contracted to serve a year in the duchy with a retinue of 24 knights 55 squires and 80 archers besides another companies.  On his arrival in France Pembroke received instructions of to recruit  500 knight, 1,500 squires and 1,500 archers. The battle at La Rochelle was the first important English defeat in the Hundred years War.

William's son and heir Edward was next in line

Edward Pomeroy son of the  5th son Thomas was with Sir Hugh Courtenay 1419 on military service in France.    "Diplomatic." (The National Archives, Kew Legal status Public Record(s)

After Sir John the barony should have gone to  Edward   "Of Sandridge, Devon." grandson of Thomas 5th son of Sir Henry Pomeroy & Joan Moels who was  the nominated heir to the Pomeroy title.

By 1416 Edward  had already secured the succession with his spouse Margaret Pomeroy with 2 sons- However it was not on the death of his father, Thomas, nor that of his uncle Sir John that he took the barony  but on the death of  Sir Thomas of Bokerel & Smallbridge called Thomas of Allaliegh in 1426.

Edward's rightful place was delayed and the continuity disrupted by the intervention of the king in favour of the ambitious of Thomas Pomeroy esq. who had married Sir Johns heir Johane Chudleigh.

Edward was a Sheriff of Devon in the 10th year of Henry VI (1432) Siezed of Bury Pomeroy, Stockleigh Pomeroy and a moiety of the manor of Harberton and one third of the manor of Brixham by virtue of  an entail of 1330.

He died  on 3 May 1446 - IPM 1446 having headed the family since May 1426 .His wife was Margaret Beville daughter of John Bevill and they had several children although we only have two of record .There was Henry, the heir who married Alice Raleigh and John who headed the cadet tree at Ingsdon in Ilsington parish.

There may have been a third son, Andrew, who died in 1494  who had at least 2 sons John and James
