Samuel Pomeroy
Samuel Pomeroy a contentious gentleman
The claim that Samuel Pomeroy' was of the Brixham Pomeroy armorial tree is probably unfounded
or at very least the connection point was misrepresented.

Landed ESTATES
Pomeroy On 11 February 1798 Robert Hedges Eyre leased the lands of Claraghmore, barony of Duhallow, county Cork, to Richard Pomeroy for three lives renewable forever.
At the time of Griffith's Valuation Robert Pomeroy held land in the parish of Drishane, barony of Duhallow and occupied a house valued at £4.10 shillings, which he held from the Reverend Richard Davis. Claraghmore, comprised of 462 acres, was advertised for sale in June 1853.
The Freeman's Journal reported that it was sold to Henry C. Justin for £1550. Nicholas Pomeroy of Claramore still owned 154 acres in county Cork in the 1870s and the representatives of Henry Pomeroy of Knockcahill owned 233 acres.
A branch of the Pomeroy family was established at Pallas, parish of Roskeen, barony of Duhallow in the early 18th century, descended from Thomas Holmes Pomeroy. Samuel Pomroy was granted 520 acres at Palice, barony of Duhallow, in 1666.
Claraghmore
Note from Harriett -
Pallice, Pallis, Pallas and other variations occur in a few places in Ireland. The Wexford one appears to be a town land but I think that the Co.Cork one applied to the house and estate. Pallas of the Holmes Pomeroy family is about 5 miles west of Mallow in North Co. Cork.
The last of that family was Amelia who married Robert Phayre of Co. Wexford. A marriage settlement deed of 1811 when her son married mentions lands in Co. Cork that came to him from Amelia Holmes Pomeroy but does not specify Pallas among the various town lands.
Grove-White records many of the larger estates of North Cork and says that Pallas was also known as Park. ( One of my school mates in the distant past came from Palace, near Bantry, Co. Cork)
I found Pallice Co. Wexford by looking for Griffith Valuation on www.askaboutireland.com This valuation was done about 1850 prior to establishing local rates on land instead of tithes. Maps of the locations can be examined though personally I find them very difficult.
As far as I can see Pallas is in the north of the county near the border of Wicklow.
It is said that Arthur Pomeroy presented the College of Heralds in Ireland with family documents that demonstrated that Samuel Pomeroy was a son of Edward Pomeroy and Wilmot Peryam. Based on this evidence the first Viscount Harberton was created, descendants of whom still carry the title.

However there has long been a dispute over this pedigree . Both sides of this tree descend from Edward Pomeroy and Margaret Bevill. One side comes down from the primary son, the other from a 3rd son of cadet side
There is mention of a John Pomeroy of St Cleer but there is NO Arthur in the cadet line of Collaton Manor

John of St Cleer 1618 could be a misreading of St Kewe or St Kew . I have extensively researched this tree, and that family had connections in St Kew. On the other hand St Cleer is only 4 miles from St Neot His Will CLEARLY relates to the Collaton Manor family. John was brother Andrew Pomeroy of Collaton -
Observation regarding the Will off John Pomeroy of (St Cleer) in 1618. He was 2nd son of William Pomeroy and his spouse Mary Bevill. He had brothers Edward & Andrew and a sister Jane Caville - His uncles were Edward & his wife Julian Forster, whose son Matthew in mentioned; John who married Mary Slanning and had children in Plympton ; Wilmot Incledon; Mary Leigh & Thomasin Pitford . John died without living issue or a spouse.
In his Will of 1618 he appears to have no connections with Ireland although if there was an IPM that might reveal if he did have any Irish connectionsVisitations says he DIED in Ireland 16 June 1618 - with the army - whether or not he bought property or married is unknown.

The pedigree Edward Pomeroy and Wilmot Perryman has an Arthur, in a pedigree lodged in Ireland he has a brother Samuel. No RECORD FOUND in Devon.. I could not find Samuel said to have been born in 1620 in Brixham, so before the 'absences ' cause by the Civil War;
In 2011 AJP went to DRO and actually searched all the published parish transcriptions for Brixham as well as the microfiche - twice I found no sign of Samuel HOWEVER the other children of the Edward & Wilmot marriage are there.
The Ingsdon line has John, 3rd son of Thomas Pomeroy & his wife Elizabeth Hengscot of Bradford. John married Mary Seccombe in 1626. This record AJP found that marriage in 1621 in Lynton North Devon - see foot of page-Their children were Mary who died as a child, Dorothy B 1631 married Sir James Langham and moved in illustrious circles & Arthur became Dean of Cork. His grandson, son of John who was Arthur Pomeroy, 1st Viscount Harberton (16 January 1723 – 9/11 April 1798) Another interesting person with Irish Connections has been subject to the scrutiny of AML . Mary Slaughter wife of Thomas Pomeroy
Charles Wilson Pomeroy’s research the 1970's found :
"Another early Pomeroy visitor to Ireland was John Pomeroy of St. Clear, Cornwall, (the second son of William Pomeroye and Mary Bevill of Colliton in Devon) died in Ireland. His will of 16 June 1618 was probated 12 March 1619 P.C.C. (Parker 49)
No further record or accounting of children could be found and since he willed all his estate to other relatives, it is assumed that he died childless."
Falley, Margaret Dickson, Irish and Scotch-Irish Ancestral Research p.150
Falley gives abstracts obtained from the Genealogical Office in Dublin. This seems to come from pedigrees worked out from Wills by somebody in the G.O. in the past.
G.O. 205 Will Pedigrees, Vol 3 pp. 112-115
Draft pedigree of Pomerai; afterward Pomeroy..................................................
"In addition, the issue of grandchildren of Valentine Pomeroy of East Ogwell, are recorded and on this is a faint pencilled addition affiliating Samuel Pomeroy of the County of Cork to Edward/Edmund Pomeroy, brother of Valentine Pomeroy. There is also a trick of arms, Pomeroy, quartering Valletort, Bevill and Collaton.
The connection of Samuel of Pallice to Brixham and Edward & Wilmot Pomeroy was falsified .Alma LaFrance in 2018 has done extensive research on this subject, the results of which will in time appear on her site Pomeroy ConnectionsOn page 116 is a pedigree (a continuation of that on p. 113) showing the affiliation of Edward Pomeroy (brother of Valentine Pomeroy) to Sir Thomas Pomeroy. A tentative affiliation line links Samuel Pomeroy of Pallice, Co.Cork to this Edward Pomeroy.
Details of Samuel Pomeroy's issue are given..............
Page 117 gives the pedigree of Colleton in Devon; five generations, down to William Pomeroy aged 14 in 1620.
It is stated that John Pomeroy (uncle of this William & his wife Mary Bevile of the Collaton Manor in Newton Ferrers branch) died in Ireland, having come over (briefly in the English military forces) with Arthur Chichester, Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, and that his son Arthur was Dean of Cork."
G.O. 243 Will Pedigrees Vol 21 pp. 304, 305 "p. 304 contains pedigrees based on the will of Samuel Pomeroy of Pallice, Co. Cork. dated 1703.............
p. 305 contains a pedigree showing the descendants of Rev. Arthur Pomeroy, Dean of Cork 1672 for three generations (his grandson Arthur Pomeroy was created Lord Harberton).
A line which affiliated The Rev. Arthur Pomeroy to John Pomeroy of Devonshire (son of William Pomeroy and Mary Bevill) has been crossed out as has a line indicating that the Rev. Arthur Pomeroy was a brother of Samuel Pomeroy of Pallice, Co. Cork"
Q ** Why does John's will 1619 not leave a legacy to the Rev. Arthur if he was his son as in GO 205? And in G.O. 243 the line of affiliation Rev. Arthur / John crossed out, also crossed out the line Rev. Arthur/Samuel as brothers. ??
