The Pomeroy family at Collaton Manor in Newton Ferrers 1424 to 1622
Begun 1999 & is ongoing, this was my first genealogical research project and as a result it has become something of a Special Project
In the West Country it was said that all the landed gentry were cousins.

Newton Ferrers ='New farm,' niwe , tun .
A manor held by the family of Ferrers (Fees 796, Ass 176 m. 32, Ipm 1306).
" The 16th and 17th Centuries saw Newton Ferrers and Noss Mayo increasingly involved with the way in which the nation was developing. The threat from the Spanish Armada required all able-bodied men liable to serve, with 55 bearing arms in Newton Ferrers liable to “Musters”. ‘Butts Park’ reminds us there was archery training close to that spot at the time."

The original manor was demolished and rebuilt in C17th - this stone Tudor doorway is all that remains of the original building
The mystery of Andrews parentage is now solved.
Nicholas was a younger son of Edward by his wife Margaret Beville
brother of Baron Henry Pomeroy Esq whose 1st wife was Anne Ralegh .
A document which mystified for 20 year has been translated and relates to property after the death of Andrews son James in 1513
After James death in France in 1513 there was a dispute over the inheritance of the Newton Ferrers property

The Andrew Pomeroy the elder, son of Nicholas died sometime in 1495 & his son Jacob or James inherited Collaton Manor and other properties, mainly on Exmoor & north Devon.
James was a soldier on knights service, a Captain, who died in 1514 age 23 in France whilst on a campaign . Thus his brother John Pomeroy , wife Johane Strowde , inherited Collaton in 1514 only for him to die 4 years later in 1518, and they had produced a son meantime Andrew (senior ) , grandson of Andrew the Elder , date of birth uncertain
Andrew went to marry Ann Matthews who was 6th daughter of Sir George Matthews of Rhdyr - ( on Wikitree) ( 6th of 26 or so children ).
Andrew died in 1581 (IPM)
Ann's grandfather was Sir William Herbert of Coldbrook, Monmouthshire & as far as I can ascertain this was of a cadet branch of the magnificent warrior family of Herberts of Raglan in Monmouthshire on the Welsh border.
This shows that apart from Collaton Manor on the south coast most of the lands he held were in North Devon around Exmoor.

John Pomeroy of Collaton Manor had married Johane Strowde - date unknown
Vivian states she was a Strowde of Parnham although it seems to me more likely his wife was from nearby the cadet branch of the Strowde family at nearby Newnham in Plympton St Mary. The Strowdes were a vast and exceedingly wealthy family of wool merchants who resided at the magnificent Elizabethan Manor at Parnham , sadly gutted by fire in 2017.
After Johns death in 1518 his young widow, Johane nee Strowde , married Lewis Parkyn. The widowed Johane would have been a quite a match, as a well dowered lady. However I have yet to discover anything about this 2nd husband other than the one mention here in a legal case regarding the debts of her 1st husband.
John was 20 when his brother James died in 1514 age 23. John age 24 had married and had at least 1 son Andrew & by 1518 was also dead .
His widow Johane Strowde married again, her 2nd husband was Lewis Parkyn.

Andrew the elder d 1495 may have been grandson of Sir Henry Pomeroy & his wife Alice Raleigh , Lady Pomeroy ,
we had no clues....
Their recorded children are Sir St Clere Pomeroy the heir born around 1440 who married Catherine Countenay in 1462
died before his father in May 1471, after the Battle of Tewkesbury, which the Yorkist won making Edward IV king. St Clere would have fought with the Courtenays, his in-laws, on the Lancastrian side.
Sir Richard Pomeroy, born in the decade of the 1440's who became heir apparent in 1471. It seems that Richard made 2 marriages. The 1st to Dame Anne about whom we know nothing beyond her name.
His 2nd marriage was to the exceedingly wealthy Elizabeth Densil widow of Martin Fortesque of Filliegh.
They continued the family line with 2 sons, Edward the eldest & Thomas and and 2 daughters, Blanche and Elizabeth.
Sir Richard completed the building of Berry Pomeroy Castle and refurbished and rebuilt the church in the village. He died in 1496
John Pomeroy the 3rd son living at the time of the death his brother Richard & according to Vivians Visitations mentioned in this Will of 1496 ***
Agnes Pomeroy was also called Anne and her 1st marriage was to Robert Budockshide, 2nd Nicholas Stukely before she finally married George Malevere of the Yorkshire family of knights whom she also outlived.
Elizabeth Pomeroy married Humphrey Courtenay , brother of Catherine Courtenay, and had 2 children
Sir Thomas Pomeroy, the 3rd son , knight of the Order of the Bath 1486, who married Agnes Kelloway step grandaughter of his father,
Sir Henry Pomeroy whose 2nd wife was Anna Camell, widow of Thomas Gyll of Hacche Arundel (Hatch )near Lodiswell in the South Hams of Devon, a Dartmouth merchant & widow of Henry Barrett of Fiddleford, her 1st husband, a Wiltshire Wool Merchant with connections in Exeter and Dorchester by whom she had a daughter; Joanna Barrett married William Kelloway a minor gentry family in Dorset who dabbled in the wool trade . Their daughter was Agnes Kelloway who married Sir Thomas, son of Henry Pomeroy Esq & Alice Raleigh.
The age difference between them suggests the possibility that he may have been married before he married Agnes Kelloway, but no evidence has been found to confirm this.
Thomas & Agnes had children 2 sons and 3 daughters before Thomas died in 1493 .His widow Agnes then married her 2nd husband the wealthy Thomas Bowring of Bowringsleigh near Kingsbridge in the South Hams of Devon.

40 years later John inherited the manor of Collaton on the death of his grandmother Margaret Beville, widow of Sir Edward Pomeroy when she died 10 Sep 1461 -
The laws of the time allowed a wife to dispose of her personal effects by deed of gift or by testament but everything lease the lands and property belonged to the husband. A wife could not make a Will without the consent of her husband but a widow could, obviously.
Collaton manor was part of the dower of Margaret Beville and she retained possession of it and its income.
Conundrum ; the Probate of the Will of Sir Richard Pomeroy in 1496 has no sign of John his brother so where did Vivian get his information from ?
PROBATE: Sir Richard Pomeroy of Berry Pomeroy - Will written 24 Aug, proved 20 Oct 1496. (P.C.C. [Horne 1]).
Besides various bequests of money to churches, his daughter Elizabeth,( who married Barnhouse) and servants, and jewels to his wife and sons, his daughter Blanche was to have custody of her son by her deceased husband;
a farm he had received from his sister Agnes was to go to Sir William Nicholl. (This is a mystery , as is the source of the farm - Sister Agnes /Anne had been married 3 times 1st to Robert Budockshide, 2nd to Nicholas Stukeley and last to George Malyverer ,all of whom she outlived)
His widow, Elizabeth, was appointed sole executor, Sir John Sapcotes and John Kirkham to act as overseers, the former on 10 Feb 1497, being made guardian of the estate of Edward, eldest son and heir, then aged 18. She also received a third of the manor of Harberton, being land and a third part of all services and rents of free tenants.
Andrew Pomeroy ( senior) DOB circa 1510 - 1513 died 1581 IPM
Married Ann Matthews daughter of Sir George Matthews of Rhdyr - Her grandfather was Sir William Herbert of Coldbrook, Monmouthshire a cadet members of family Herberts of Raglan on Monmouthshire on the Welsh border.
More Here
Ann Matthew was one of the 7 children by her fathers first wife Margred Herbert of Coldbrook whose father was Sir William Herbert of Coldbrook a cadet member of the great Herbert family of Raglan Castle, the Earls of Pembroke. Raglan Castle was built by her grandfather the 1st Earl , during the Wars of the Roses and improved during Tudor Times.
Sir William Herbert had Henry TUDOR in his custody at Raglan around 1462 paying the king Edward IV an enormous sum for his wardship.
There was long standing rivalry between the Herbert and Tudor families and, it seems quite probable that William Herbert was responsible in some degree for the death of Henry 's father Edmund Tudor. The young man's time Raglan is often viewed as one of imprisonment although he was well treated: chronicler Polydore Vergil recorded that Henry was “kept as prisoner, but honourably brought up with the wife of William Herbert”.
Coldbrook in Monmouthshire probable home of Anne Mattews

COLDBROOK FARM one of properties held by the Herberts of Raglan Castle
This high status vernacular manor house, which later became a farmhouse, was restored in 2011 by the new owner who discovered under layers of Victorian 'improvements', a wonderful house with carved oak panelling, windows & doorways.
It has proved to be an almost unique survival in England with a great hall that shows signs that it once included a dais for the lord of the Manor . The style of interior at Coldbrook reflects that of the great castle at Raglan and Dendrochronology from Coldbrook Farm showed it was built in 1538, with some of the wood, which would have taken years to carve by hand, was felled several years before that.
Experts think the house was probably built for one of the many sons, legitimate & illegitimate, of the Earl of Pembroke, William Herbert of Raglan the great warrior knight of the Wars of the Roses.
Sir George Matthews of Rydr had a staggering number of children in Rhdyr, Glamorgan Wales. 28 children in all, 13 of whom were daughters, all of whom needed a dowry.
There was a branch of the Mathews family with lands in St Kew in Cornwall which might answer my question regarding the marriage of Jane Hext and Andrew Pomeroy in St Kew in 1601.
Jane Callard widow of John Stone and Thomas Hext of Launceston also had a daughter Winifred Stone. I think that after her son in law Digory Hext died in 1600 the Widow Jane Hext sent her orphaned grand daughter Jane to live with her aunt Winifred in St Kew.
Winifred Stone was older sister to Anne stone wife of Digory Hext died 11 JUN 1634 St Kew, Winifred was married to John Matthew , clerk, of St Kew d 1661;
William Matthew's family inherited a diminishing fortune and Captain George Mathew, the last of the family to live in Radyr, married Elizabeth Poyntz and the couple departed from Radyr to live on her estates at Thurles in County Tipperary, Ireland during 1625.
Tresonger was home of John Matthew gent who married a Vivian of Truan. He was originally of Penetinny near St Kew village, who gained by marrying the heiress of Tresonger, of Tresonger in Endellion A younger branch of the Matthews was of Middle-Amble in Kew. The elder line of this branch became extinct before the year 1700 Originating from Glamorganshire the Irish branch of the Mathews migrated to the West Indies and to Cornwall.
The 6th of 7 daughters of John Stone by his wife Jane Callard was Mary Stone. After John Stone Died in 1573 his widow Jane married Mayor Thomas Hext and her daughter Mary married Digory Hext of Launceston, son of the wealthy merchant her mothers 2nd husband,
Digory & Mary had 2 children before she died. Jane and Thomas who died in 1586 Mary seems to have died at his birth.
Jane Hext was heiress to both her father, Digory , & her grandfather Thomas , and was married Andrew Pomeroy the younger at St Kew on 30 September 1601. She was about 15 years old

DILLON of Chimwell in Bratton Fleming
Following the Norman Conquest of Britain in 1066, Bratton was given to Erchenbold le Flemynge (Archibald the Belgian); hence Bratton Fleming gained its present name. At this time Bratton was a small community of a dozen or so farmers and smallholders.
The le Fleming family were Lords of Bratton Fleming for nearly 400 years until Thomas le Fleming who died childless in 1471. Bratton then passed to the Dillon family who lived at Chimwell (Chumhill), just outside the main village and in 1599 they sold the manor, for £9,900 to the Chichester’s of Youlston (near Shirwell)
HEXTFrom Jonathon Hext the Hext Family Historian who kindly sent me information that include the following
There was a *Thomas Hext* living in Launceston in 1573 who was probably the 2nd son of the *John Hext* who sold *Kingstone* the house near Totnes, to the *Barnhouse* family in the 16th century.
Digory was possibly a son or a brother of Thomas Hext an alderman for Launceston - In 1588 his name appears on the list of gentlemen who were called upon to provide the government with money at the time of the Spanish Armada –"March 27, 1588 - £25." Also a Thomas Hicks, Mayor who build house is min square still there. Same man?
They were probably a merchant Family and from the wool trade which the family had been involved in since around 1400.
DIGORY HEXT or Hickes gentleman, wool merchant and Mayor of Launceston.
Ist marriage to Anne, the daughter of John Stone, by whom he had 2 children
Thomas who died in 1586, and maybe wife Mary with him.
Jane who married Andrew Pomeroy had children and died in 1610
Digory's 2nd marriage was to Julian Wadham-of St Stephens by Saltash September 13th, 1596 Julian or Julia Wadham daughter was of Sir George Wadham of Lewiston Dorset and St Stephen by Saltash
He took a lease on a house and land in Fowey 1599. and died whilst Mayor of Launceston in 1600

In his 1595 Will Thomas Hext of Launceston, mayor, has Digory as his natural & legitimate son with brothers George & Thomas and his granddaughter Jayne
From Jonathon Hext the Hext Family Historian who kindly started me off when he sent me information that include the following:-
There was a *Thomas Hext* living in Launceston in 1573 who was probably the 2nd son of the *John Hext* who sold *Kingstone* the house near Totnes, to the *Barnhouse* family in the 16th century.
Digory was son Thomas Hext an alderman for Launceston - In 1588 his name appears on the list of gentlemen who were called upon to provide the Crown with money at the time of the Spanish Armada –"March 27, 1588 - £25."
Thomas Hicks, Mayor of Launceston built houses is main square, which are still there.
The Hext were probably a merchant Family made wealthy by the wool trade in which the family had been involved in since around 1400.
I later found that son Digory had married twice .
2nd wife was Julia WADHAM Married to Digory HEXTE , merchant of Launceston on 13 DEC 1596 in St Stephen's, Saltash, her Father was Sir George WADHAM
& her mother was Dorothy HICHENS b: ABT 1550 of Hole Manor near Saltash Cornwall
St Stephen Saltash Registers have 1567 Dorothy, daughter of William Hichins of Hole near Saltash - a lost farm .
Thomas Hext/Heckes/ Hickes - his Will of 1595 shows that he had 3 sons George, Thomas and Digory and the Hext family think he is related to Thomas Hext of Staverton in Devon and therefore the other Hext families in Cornwall.
Thomas Hext of Launceston in Cornwall born in 1487 was an alderman and a successful and wealthy merchant who bought up considerable property and lands around the town . He was Mayor several times in 1535, 1555 , 1575-76 , 1581-82 and 1589-90.
He was tenant of the lands of Launceston priory, of which the borough of Newport formed a part, was mayor of Launceston when the town was granted its new charter in 1535-6 .
Thomas married Jane Stone nee Callard widow of John Stone and his son Digory married Jane's daughter Anne Stone - !
In 1588 his name appears on the list of gentlemen who were called upon to provide the Crown with money at the time of the Spanish Armada - "March 27, 1588 - £25."
He built several houses in the centre of the town. It seems almost certain that stone used for these buildings was taken from the recently dissolved and magnificent Launceston Priory. They are still standing on the corner of the Market Square-
From his will -Digory Hext was his son b circa 1565 - who married Mary 6th daughter of John Stone MP & Jane Callard of Trevigo-Married circa 1580 they had at least two children, Thomas and Jane before Anne died. Their son Thomas died in 1586 and Jane became her father's sole heir. In the burial register of St Thomas' church, Launceston there is an entry "1586, Feb 22nd, Thomas Hecks, the son of Digorie Hecks"
In 1599-1600 Digory Hext was Mayor of Launceston, like his father before him. Digory married again - Julia Wadham his second wife he married in St Stephen by Launceston September 13th, 1596.
Jane Hext , heiress to her grandfather Thomas married Andrew Pomeroy of the Collaton Pomeroys on 30th September 1601 in St Kew
William(2) a son to *Andrew Pomeroy and Jane* , William born 22 Oct 1606 Newton Ferrers.
Which fits with the dates in the tree. Andrew Pomeroy was living in/ of St Columb Major by 1620 with daughter Ann was born 1608
who married *Peter Jenkins* in St Columb Major died 1682.

The register of St Columb Major Deaths 15 Feb 1636
Elizabeth Vivian age 18 months and 5 year old Charles Vivian children of John Vivian gent by his second wife Mary Cavil dau of William Cavil and Mary Pomeroy
Thomas Cromwell first ordered in 1538 that in every parish, in England and Wales, a list must be kept recording all baptisms, burials and marriages. Initially, these records were kept on loose leaves but the rules were later tightened by James I ordering the records to be kept in parchment books. His order stated that all previous entries, back to at least the beginning of the reign of Queen Elizabeth in 1558, must be transcribed into the new books. Unfortunately, many parish clerks only did as instructed and the 20 or so years previous to 1558 were lost when the originals were destroyed. Some do remain (about 800) complete back to 1538 - this explaining the variations in the start of parish registers.
There has never been any regulation as to the amount of information which must be recorded, so the records vary greatly, although in 1754 "Lord Hardwicke's Marriage Act" introduced a set of printed forms which has helped keep records fairly consistent since that time. The Act was introduced in an attempt to make illegal all clandestine marriages for which no publication of banns, or a licence had been granted, and after 25th March 1754 were to be classed as void unless they had been performed in a church or chapel.

"WINKLEIGH is a large ancient village, situated on a lofty eminence, on the Crediton and Torrington road, 6 miles S.W. of Chulmleigh and E.N.E. of Hatherleigh, and 22 miles W.N.W. of Exeter.( Mid devon) The manor was for a long period divided between the Keynes and Tracey families, and was afterwards held by those of Holland and Lethbridge.
Winkleigh was split between two families, the Keynes and the Traceys. Both of them erected 'castles' (possibly only fortified manor houses) by the village. They are known as Croft Castle and Court Castle. (Although today only mounds remain). During the Middle Ages a tiny market town grew up between the two castles.
The manor of Winkleigh Keynes belonged to the family of Keynes so early as the reign of Henry II (1154+35 ). After a continuance of fifteen descents, it was sold by John Keynes, Esq., before Sir William Pole's time. It has been a considerable time in the Lethbridge family, and is now the property of Sir Thomas Buckler Lethbridge, Bart., whose family had a seat, called Court Barton (fn. 1) , near the church, lately purchased by the Rev. John Tossell Johnson, and now occupied by a farmer. The manor of Winkleigh Tracey belonged to the family of Tracey. It afterwards was granted to the Hollands, dukes of Exeter, and passed to Thomas Marquis of Dorset: this also belongs now to Sir T. B. Lethbridge, Bart. The lords of the manor of Winkleigh Keynes had formerly the power of inflicting capital punishment.
Hundred Roll A record of the reign of Edward II.(1272 = 35 years) , which grants the custody of the estates of Gilbert of Gloucester to Richard Clare, describes lands at Winkleigh, et Curia ibidem. That Curia is no doubt the Court, which was the seat of the Lethbridge family.

NCLEDON
INCLEDON OF BUCKLAND IN BRAUNTON
The manor of Buckland in Braunton North devon with an estate called Incledon, belonged to the Incledon family from an early period till the year 1759.
Richard Incledon, Gent., 1558; John Incledon, 1570; Lewis Incledon, 1614; John Incledon, Esq., 1661; Lewis Incledon, Esq., 1698; Henry Incledon, Esq., 1736; John Incledon, Esq., 1746.
The earliest Incledon records are from the 12th century. They probably lived at the adjoining farm. Buckland was purchased in 1319 and Incledons have lived there ever since. Only once in seven centuries was the head of the house a Webber, because the elder daughter married Philip Rogers Webber of Loxhore near Barnstaple in the mid 18th century. Webber came from a pewterer family, and both his father and grandfather were Mayors of Barnstaple. Their portraits hang in the Guildhall at Barnstaple.
Meanwhile the Incledons had been supplying several Recorders of Barnstaple over a period of 79 years. In about 1746 Robert Incledon built Pilton House, Barnstaple, now an old people's home, and his son Benjamin, Recorder in 1758, was living there in 1770. The 1830 Recorder, Robert Newton Incledon, also lived there. The two stone falcons of the Incledon crest stood at its entrance gate, but were later transferred to Buckland. Philip Rogers Webber reconstructed the front of Buckland in the Queen Anne style, completing it in 1762. They had 16 children, and rebuilt the east wing to accommodate them. His son Henry Webber was Caroline's Great-great-great-Grandfather.
Buckland had 650 acres of farm land and ancient farm buildings including one dating from 1660. The 1841 census lists 35 people living on the estate. While other places in Devon called Buckland are probably named after the male deer, it is believed that this Buckland was Boke-land, indicating that the estate is listed in the Domesday Book.
The manor of Buckland in this parish, with an estate called Incledon, belonged to the Incledon family from an early period till the year 1759. One of the co-heiresses of the late John Incledon, Esq. brought it to the late Philip Rogers Webber, Esq. whose son, Henry Webber, Esq., a general in the East India Company's service, is the present proprietor. Buckland house is the seat of General Webber. There was also a manor of Buckland Chailow in this parish, the inheritance of the Giffard family, who held it under the duchy of Cornwall in the reign of James I.
Heanton Punchardon is the next village where branch of Pomeroy’s held a small manor

The Slanning family is first documented in 1538 and spanned nine generations until the extinction of the male line in 1700.
