Tregony

Tregony was recorded in the Domesday Book (1086) as held by Frawin from Robert, Count of Mortain.

Its earliest known spelling was Trefhrigoni, in 1049.

Today Tregony had no church and no castle . The castle decayed and eas robbed out until no trace remains except
the outline of its walls in the streets that once surrounded it.
The Church was gradually submerged as the once navigable estuary silted up .
It was abandoned in the early C16th & the parishioners used the church at nearby Cuby

At Domesday 1068  Tregony consisted of  1 hide of land and land for 5 ploughs. There were 2 ploughs, 5 serfs, 3 villeins, 6 smallholders, 12 acres of woodland, 100 acres of pasture, 3 cattle, 40 sheep and 20 goats. The value of the manor was 15 shillings though it had formerly been worth 25 shillings. Held by Frawin from Robert, Count of Mortain, Ist Norman Earl of Cornwall (c. 1031–c. 1095) & half-brother of King William the Conqueror  on their mother's side.

The castle at Tregony is said to have been built by Sir Henry Pomeroy a supporter of Bad Prince John & later King ,  brother of  Richard the Lionheart the ever absent King of England between 1189 to 1199 -Its possible this is true since Henry captured and fortified St Michaels Mount for John before 1194

He was the 1st of 8 successive Henry Pomeroy's & in about 1166 married Rohesia, sister of  Reginald de Dunstanville the 3rd creation of Earl of Cornwall both the illegitimate offspring of King Henry I by Sibella Corbett.
In 1194 when King Richard demanded he answer for his actions & accused him of high treason Henry is said to have committed suicide . As a result his lands and properties were attained into the Crowns custody

Today Tregony has no castle and no church - The Castle was decayed &   robbed out   until no trace remains only a vague outline of its was echoed in the streets around the place it once stood

2nd son of Sir Henry was Captain William Pomeroy In 1348 there was a William Pomeroy parson of the parish  of Lanihorn, now  called Ruan Lanihorne & very close to Tregony in Cornwall.

3rd son Nicholas Pomeroy, High Sheriff of Devon,  d. Aft 1383.  He was also known at Nicholas of Tewkesbury and seems to have been a merchant- more here

4th John Pomeroy,  d. Aft 1357 married and had a son Nicholas who seems to have been a prebendary at Glasney College in Penryn Cornwall

5th son Sir Thomas Kings Knight married Johan and had at least one son William who married & whose son
Edward married Margaret Beville in about 1403 ; after being usurped by Thomas Pomeroy Esq and his wife Joanna Chudleigh , he inherited the barony in 1426 when Sir Thomas died . Edward and his wife & family went to live at Tregony where Thomas &  John Cole  pursued what were often quite dubious claims against Edward Pomeroy. The story goes that in 1418 Thomas and John arrived at Tregony with an armed band of soldiers  and forced their way into the castle; they locked Lady Margaret up for several days without food or water and ejected Edward by way of window, defenestration !. Quite what the result was is unclear other than Thomas was made Baron when  Sir John died on 1416. The barony reverted to its rightful heir, Edward , when Thomas died childeless in 1426

1418: Edward Pomeroy and his wife Margaret had been rightfully seised of the manor of Tregony for 14 years, by virtue of a fine of £100  levied to them and their heirs male by Baron Sir John de la Pomeray, knight, (deceased ) since the beginning of the King’s present expedition,
Thomas Pomeroy and other’s have forcibly entered the manor, imprisoned Margaret there for two days, ousted her and her servants therefrom, and occupied the manor and did damage there.
The petitioners therefore pray that, since they cannot during the said expedition be helped by the common law, the guardian (duke of Bedford, Guardian of England) will summon Thomas to appear before him at the quinzaine of Trinity next, and also grant a writ to the sheriff of Devon to make public proclamation of the said summons.

Endorsed: On 5 July Henry V (1419) it was agreed by Council that Thomas should be summoned to appear before them in the quinzaine of Michaelmas next. (Powley, page 68).

1420: Joan, widow of Sir John de la Pomeray, without licence of the King, made over her rights in Beri to Thomas and his wife Joan and to John Cole. She died on Corpus Christi day.

1446 After her husband Edward's death  Lady Margaret 's dower lands  were assigned in the presence of Henry Pomeray, esquire , to the son and heir of Edward,  Henry Esq and his wife Alice Ralegh.

Cornwall Record Office: Carlyon of Tregrehan [CN/1125 - CN/2776]

The marriage of  Rev. John Pomery of St. Ewe brought him a substantial fortune, including the barton of Trelissick in St. Ewe as a residence.

Trelissick having been the property of Thomasine Hooker, a great-niece of Richard Hooker, the author .

Thomasine Hooker Bb St Ewe 1690 daughter of John Hooker if so she married age 24

the above from 1998 suggests her father was this man

John Hooker (or "Hoker") alias John Vowell (c. 1527–1601) of Exeter in Devon, was an English historian, writer, solicitor, antiquary, and civic administrator. He was the second son and eventual heir of Robert Vowell (d.1538) of Exeter  alias Hooker by his third wife Agnes Dobell (or Doble), daughter of John Dobell of Woodbridge in Suffolk.  His grandfather was John Vowell alias Hooker (d.1493), MP for Exeter.

From 1555 to his death he was Chamberlain of Exeter. He was twice MP for Exeter in 1570/1 and 1586, and for Athenry in Ireland in 1569 and wrote an influential treatise on parliamentary procedure. He wrote an eye-witness account of the siege of Exeter during the Prayer Book Rebellion in 1549. He spent several years in Ireland as legal adviser to Sir Peter Carew, and following Carew's death in 1575 wrote his biography. He was one of the editors of the second edition of Raphael Holinshed's Chronicles, published in 1587. His last, unpublished and probably uncompleted work was the first topographical description of the county of Devon. He founded a guild of Merchant Adventurers under a charter from Queen Mary Tudor.  He was the uncle of Richard Hooker, the influential Anglican theologian.

Rev John Pomeroy is not listed in Anglican Clergy Database as rector in St Ewe but his WILL says he’s of Trellisick but that is not a parish Will also mentions St Neots
