Honiton & Area
HONITON, is an ancient borough & market town in south-east border of Devon, beside of the river Otter . It lies on the Roman Road, the Fosse Way, which runs from Exeter to Axminster then in a straight line across the country to Lincoln on the East Coast.
Honiton is 16 miles from Exeter& is bounded by the parishes of Moncton and Offwell, Farway and Sidbury & to the west is Gittisham and Awliscombe.
Farway is a small parish of only about 8 miles in circumference and has a good soil, mostly pasture and meadowland, in which can be found Hembury Fort, St. Cyres, and Gittisham Hills.
Honiton has long been famed for the making of beautiful handmade lace.
Upottery and Buckerell are close to Honiton and both were held by a cadet line of the Pomeroys from around 1250 AD when the 2nd son of the 2nd Henry Pomerai Geoffery married as his 2nd wife a lady called Matilda de Ralegh - his first wife was Joanna Allaley from Allelleigh., a family name which over the centuries morphed into Hawley
1068 The Domesday Book held by Ralph de Pomeroy
Upottery Otri: consisting of just over 5830 acres and included a Mill. It lies 5 miles N.E. by N. of Honiton.
Buckerell , is 1560 acres in the Otter valley is 3 ½ miles W. by S. of Honiton, anciently being held by the Pomeroys.
Smallridge is a tithing of the manor of Axminster consisting of 8 villagers. 5 smallholders & 5 slaves. 15 acres Meadow; 31 acres of Pasture; 0.5 hides of Woodland 0.5 & a mill.
Later Pomeroys do not seem to have been of any great importance in the town, being mainly artisans and yeomen & freeholders who worked their own land.
FARWAY Families
Boycombe Farmhouse at Farway this late C16 manor house is now a farm, at which Pomeroy was probably an overseer for the Boycombe estate .
The manor of Farway held anciently by Flemming, Mohun, Osbourne & Devenish afterwards the Courtenays, until Henry Courtenay was attainted in November 1538 ; Henry Courtenay with his wife and son Edward were arrested and incarcerated in the Tower of London. He joined the Catholic Poles in endeavouring to raise the men of Devon and Cornwal in the Western Rebellion of 1538. He was executed in December and his lands were forfeited.
Farway Hearth Tax 1674 Pomeroy, William 5 hearths - indicating a man of substance.
There were two Pomeroys in Farway who were Contributors to the rebuilding of St Paul’s Cathedral in London, after the Great Fire of London in 1660-the appeal in 1678 was countrywide - everyone gave a little. - This record is useful in that it gives locations of families in 1678.
In Farway in east Devon
Nicholas Pomery contributed 6 d (sixpence)
John Pomery also gave 6 d, and these were the average contributions for that village, the greatest being £1 the least being 2 d
Boycombe is an exceptional, and unusually well preserved 16th century mansion , almost unaltered except for the demolition of one wing.

NOTES
1546 Lord of the Manor of Colyton was Henry Courtenay, Marquis of Exeter fell foul of his cousin King Henry VIII & was executed & all his lands were Attainted & confiscated to the crown. After while , shrewdly judging the moment when the King needed money for his wars and shipbuilding, a group of farmers and merchants in Colyton got together the sum of 1000 marks.
They travelled to London , taking the money with them and managed to negotiate the purchase of much of the seized estates from the King. This resulted in a deed of “feoffment” being signed on 6th January 1546.
The names of the original Colyton feoffees were:-
John Strowbridge the elder of Howberhayne, Merchant;
John Strowbridge the younger of Strathhayne (Streethayne);
John Newton of Willhayne yeoman; John Newton of Tritchayne yeoman;
Peter Baggewell; Robert Ffollett of Colyforde, first bailiff; John Byrde of Colyton silk & serge maker; John Morrys of Colyton yeoman; Thomas Whyte of Colyton yeoman;
John Crabbe of Colyton yeoman; William Hamlyn of Colyton merchant;
Robert Drake of Colyton; John Buckland of Colyton wool merchant;
William Carpenter of Colyton; Robert Weston of Heathhayne;
Nicholas Hooper of Colyton; John Maunder of Colyton cloth manufacturer;

Devon Lay Subsidies for Pomeroy 1524 & 1545
These were a records from a tax levied on lay people on their movable property rather than land. The tax was usually raised for a particular venture such as a military campaign. The poor were exempt from the tax as was clerical property. The clergy were subject to a separate clerical subsidy. The tax was also known as Tenths and Fifteenths. The records consist of lists compiled by the assessors of those eligible to pay.
Those taken between 1334 and 1524 only give the village totals so 1332 is the last tax to provide personal information. After 1523 & Henry VII 's Reformation Roman Catholics and other nonconformists were forced to pay double rates.

Researching for a link between the Ilsington Pomeroy group I found Thomas Pomeroy of Bradford in Devon and later of Ingsdon in Ilsington Parish married to Elizabeth Henscott on 10th Feb 1575 and produced numerous children including
Thomas born 1579 living in Ilsington 1609 .
records show there was a connections - Here
It was established in 2012 that this was a new family group at LANDRAKE , one which later moved to London. There was a Christopher Pomeroy buried 15th Aug 1590 in the parish of Ilsington near Bovey Tracey in Devon who was son of John Pomeroy, grandson of Robert Pomeroy and Elizabeth Beaumont .
Robert and Elizabeth are at the head the Ingsdon of Ilsington Pomeroy tree and are of the armorial line from Berry Pomeroy. Robert was son of John who was son of Sir Edward Pomeroy and spouse Margaret Beville and brother of Sir Henry who built the castle at Berry Pomeroy with his wife Alice Raleigh.
The Pomeroy Pedigree says John was at Upper or Over Ingsdon in Ilsington after 1500 his wife who is not named.
The pedigree shows he had a son Christopher died and was buried 15th Aug 1590 and who had a son Isaac buried in Ilsington died 1642
I also found a John Pomerie - Baptised 28 Dec 1580 - BLACK TORRINGTON (mid) ,DEVON, s/o Christofer Pomerie
Then I found several Pomeroys called Christopher in Honiton -
