Pomeroy Family #515

Researching  forward from Richard son of John Pomery  by his 2nd wife Elizabeth Evens   Bapt 7 Jan 1781 Werrington Devon /now in Cornwall

Youngest  of 8 children Richard at some point left Devon & the countryside, possible after his father died . He  went to London, where in 1807, age 26 , at  on the Thames at Rotherhithe  he married Devon girl  Isott Webber, born 1788 West Teignmouth;  The marriage was witnessed by Thomas Webber & Elizabeth Giles...more on that below.

They had one son  Augustus Stephen Jeffrey Pomery born in 1818 in Stepney . In 1837 Augustus was married in Stepney to Sarah Georgiana Moore born Colchester 1813 .
He too worked at the East India Dock as a clerk where they started their family.

In 1846 Augustus changed the spelling of his name to Pomeroy & moved the family to Liverpool to work for Royal Albert Docks where he moved up the organisation .

Richard went to work  at the East India Docks  offices as a check clerk and remained there until he was retired. He died in Liverpool in 1859
His wife Issot had died of typhoid in 1850 in Stepney

St Mary Parish Rotherhithe Surrey south bank of the Thames Rotherhithe, or, as it was  occasionally called, "Redriff,"

Worthy of note as the first place where docks were constructed for the convenience of London.

July 1 2021   just found - this might explain why Richard was there at that time. The Greenland Dock.
I think Richard might have gone to London via the port of Teignmouth which would explain how he met Issot
Webber  from West Teignmouth

For many years there was a brickwall regarding Richard Pomery. Then we found him in 1851 census - Died Liverpool 1859 Married Rotherhithe 1807 to Isott Webber born 1788 West Teignmouth  who died of Typhus 1850  In Stepney -

She was  daughter of Pearce Giles .....his name was actually Thomas Augustus Pearce Giles born twin to  Thomas Richard Pearce Giles St Dunstans Stepney s/o Joseph Giles ( mariner RN) and wife  Elizabeth . She had to be  Elizabeth WEBBER!

She had married  Joseph Giles in Stoke Damerel (Plymouth) in 1801.

Isott's father John had brother Thomas Webber ; was he the other witness ?

The Giles family were living in Stepney around the same time as Augustus S.J.Pomeroy was born and they remained friends as Mary Bertha Giles visited them in 1871.
