Landed estates in Ireland  Seeking  to Connect the #515 Pomeroy family with the Virginian-Irish Pomeroy's

From Norman times there was probably regular crossing of Pomeroys to Ireland, though genealogists look for those who settled in a more permanent fashion.

The Earldom of Desmond having clung to the old religious and political traditions for a long time finally rebelled only to be totally and brutally defeated - 1569–1573 and 1579–1583

In 1491 the arrival in Cork of Perkin Warbeck, claiming to be Richard Duke of York won the support of  the majority of the people of Cork but gained it the dubious title of  ‘the rebel county’.

The Roman Catholic Queen Mary encouraged colonisation in Ireland in the 1550’s however the religious reformation waited until her sister Elizabeth became queen in 1558.

The first 30 years of Queen Elizabeth’s reign saw a constant stream of settlers into Gaelic and Anglo-Norman areas. However Elizabeth I did not want to cover the cost of taking total control of Ireland. It proved to be inevitable & the battle between Gaelic Ireland and England was poised to begin with the 9 years war in Ireland.

In the summer of 1631 the town of Baltimore, in West Cork, fell victim to a sensational attack by Moorish pirates. Two Moorish ships that left Algiers under the command of one of the most successful leaders of Barbary pirates, a renegade Dutchman, Murat Reis the Younger. They sailed 1000 miles  to the coast of Ireland & West Cork,  seizing a number of smaller vessels as they went & imprisoning their crews. Reis' original target was probably Kinsale,  but the captain of one of the captured ships was a local man John Hackett , who declared the harbour Kinsale was  'too hot' to enter. In return for his freedom he offered to guide  Reis to the defenceless village of Baltimore. At dawn they launched their attack on the sleeping village .  More than 200 armed corsairs landed & torched the thatched roofs of the houses, taking the inhabitants  'young and old from their beds'. They abducted more than 100 men, women, & children from the coast of Ireland  carrying them away to the slave markets & galleys of North Africa.

TITHE APPLOTTMENT SURVEYS  were carried out in the 1830’s in an attempt to consolidate the amounts of Tithes payable on land

These lists only mention some occupiers of land.  Later in the 1850’s Sir Richard Griffith valued all land as a basis for local rates to replace Tithes.  Due to the loss of all census returns before 1901 in a fire at the Public Records Office these are used for family research.

The names here are of Pomeroys unattached to any of the families above.

1880. John Henry Pomeroy ,ancestor of Patricia Pomeroy Woods of Lynn Haven FL., is recorded in the 1880 Mitchel County Ga. Census as born in Ireland.

His parents were also born in Ireland. Family tradition says that he hired as a sailor on a ship from Belfast, and remained in USA.

So far his family in Ireland has not been identified.

If the origins of this family can be identified it might tell us when they went to Ireland and what the connection is with the Devon and Cornwall area, particularly Lewannick , from where  DNA tells us my Pomeroy ancestors originated .

POMEROY IN MILLSTREET 1700s

Church records have become available on internet. Records from about 1830 are available on microfilm in the National Library.

A group of mainly baptism entries of the latter 1700s have been put on=line but seem to come from a difficult source as many places and names are entered NR = not readable.

The originals are not available to the general public for examination.
