St  Cleer

Although a great part of the parish consists of wild and extensive moors and commons, there are a number of good and well-cultivated estates in it.

The church of St. Cleer first built in timber  around 800 A.D. was rebuilt towards the end of the 13th century & the church 97 foot high tower , containing a ring of 6 bells ,was added  in the 15th century.

The parish of St Cleer, named after its patron, Saint Clarus is situated in the Deanery and Hundred of West.Bounded on the north by Altarnun and North Hill, on the east by Linkinhorne and St Ive, on the south by Menheniot amd Liskeard, and on the west by St Neot from which it is separated by the River Fowey.

St Cleer was once an eminent mining parish with some of the richest and best-paying mines in Cornwall with the most populous villages of Caradon Town, Pensilva, Minions and Crows Nest. These were crowded with men & not unlike the mining camps of Colorado and the Far West of C19th America. The main villages are Tremar, Tremar Coom, Common Moor & Darite

Rosecraddoc was an early settlement east of St Cleer; possibly the original settlement now known as St Cleer. It was recorded in 1086 predating the church; the first dedication of which was recorded in 1202.
In Cornish: Ryskarasek is Rosecraddoc

The Heritage Gateway states “in 1239 Ingeram de Bray (in right of his wife), Lord of 'Recradoch' gave the church of St Clarus to the Knights Hospitallers, who held it until 1538”.

About a mile to the north of  St Cleer stands the Trevetheye Quoit . This   granite  monument was erected  2000 years.  Trevethy, Trevedi or Trevithy   in the Cornish language, means  'the place of the graves'.
