Tavistock and its powerful Abbey
Thought for a long time to have been founded in 961 by Ordgar, Ealdorman of Devon, more recent thinking is that it was founded of his son Ordwulf in 974;.
An 981 the charter of confirmation was granted by the English King ,Æthelred the Unready, who was Ordwulf's nephew, suggest this, with it an endowment of lands in Devon, Dorset and Cornwall. The monks owned nearby Hurdwick quarry and the stone from there, which is notable for its greenish colour, was used
& Tavistock town was built largely of this material.
The abbey became the second wealthiest in Devon after the Benedictine Abbey at Plympton, its worth an estimated at £902. Tavistock Abbey was closely linked with the Benedictine abbey of Buckfast, which was founded at the same time. There is a pilgrim route across Dartmoor between the two that can still be followed today.
Fairs & markets were an important part of the social structur of the time and in 1552 a charter for fairs was granted to the Earl of Bedford, who was Lord of the Mano, by Edward IV . One on 23 April, the other on 28 November.
On 3 March 1539 the last abbot, John Peryn, together with twenty monks, surrendered the abbey to the king. They were granted a pension of a £100
The town became a stannary or tin town, as well as a wool cloth and market town. Tin taken there from Dartmoor where it was stamped & weighed with monthly courts held for the regulation of mining affairs.
Little remains of the abbey except the refectory, two gateways and a porch. The abbey church, dedicated to Our Lady and St Rumon, was destroyed by Danish raiders in 997 and rebuilt under Lyfing, the second abbot. The church was further rebuilt in 1285 and the greater part of the abbey between 1457 and 1458.
Last abbots at Tavistock were William Pewe 2 May 1447 – 26 December 1450 John Dynyngton February 1451 – December 1490 ; Richard Yeme February 1491 – c. March 1492; Richard Banham 1492–1523
The last abbot before the Dissolution was John Peryn 1523–1539
