netflix series review

Betty Cooper taught us that it is okay not to be okay and just how important it is to relay what we're feeling and express ourself and make ourself clear.

Riverdale hit our computer and TV screens in 2017, quickly becoming the new hit series among teenagers. It has 2 seasons on Netflix and the third is now airing weekly. It follows the journey of of four teenagers; Archie Andrews, Jughead Jones, Veronica Lodge and Betty Cooper. The first season narrates the mysterious death of Jason Blossom and reveals the true dark nature of Riverdale.

Season 2 came to us in 2018, with a total of 22 episodes compared to 13 in Season 1. It only shows the rapid popularity this series is enjoying. *Season 2 Spoilers* This season saw the characters evolve and change in massive ways from relationships to personalities and experiences. We saw Betty lose her father, Jughead joined the Serpents, Veronica excommunicated herself from her family and Archie went to jail. All of them were very drastic changes.

We see character development as the season progresses but somehow at times the show confused me, finding it hard to watch. The fact that the series was stretched to 22 episodes, I believe the increase of airtime is a big letdown. I felt as though the black hood storyline didn't keep me as hooked and intrigued as I was in Season 1.

Riverdale has truly set the bar for the new generation of teen drama and has become a classic among the younger generations. Although one of my biggest peeves about the series is its over sexualising the show. I find it unnecessary to have a steamy shower scene of teenagers, or finding them naked in bed. These scenes do not make the show more meaningful or make the story more complex. Well come on...the characters are supposed to be 15-16 years old. No need to sexualise the relationship of these teenage characters.

I believe Riverdale is a great show and it’s addictive! It has great characters and a storyline that makes you watch ‘til your eyes drop. If you're watching Riverdale for the first time, expect that certain aspects of the relationships among characters are sensationalised. They probably don’t actually happen in real life. This is just to spice up the show and add that TV magic for the audience to see.
