Film Review

Ann taught us that being happy isn't having everything in our life be perfect. Maybe it's about stringing together all the little things.

Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants

Directed by: Ken Kwapis

Distributed by: Warner Bros Pictures

Release Date: 1 June 2005

A riveting and heartfelt movie, centered around the theme, coming of age and rated a 77% on rotten tomatoes.

Four teenage girls; Bridget, Leena, Tibby and Carmen are the best of friends. Scratch that, they’re closer than best friends... lets just say they’re so close that they’re practically sisters, spending every second of everyday together partaking in the normal experiences that every teenage girl goes through (I’m sure we all get the picture). After cherishing many summers together the four finally go their separate directions for a few months before they begin their senior year in high school. Bridget goes to Mexico to a soccer camp, Leena visits family in Greece, whilst both Carmen and Tibby stay closer to their hometown in Maryland. Prior to leaving they decide to embark on a shopping trip; trying new outfits, messing around and laughing, just like your typical outing. However, there is something mysteriously supernatural, about this day out (not in a bad way, but more so in an unexplainable enchanted manner) and little do they know that this day will bind their friendship forever.

What they discover is more than just a lucky coincidence, it’s so much more... The question is, what lures them all into trying on the same pair of jeans? And why is it that the jeans are a perfect fit all four times, despite the different body types? Is it a trick, is it an allusion or...IS IT MAGIC? Since the jeans miraculously fit all four of them, and perhaps they secretly believe they have encountered a supreme divinity beyond their control, the teenage friends create a plan to share it around throughout their break. They each get a week and must detail to the next on the list about their experiences with the pair of jeans. Throughout the movie the four “sisters” endeavour to face challenges of love, trust, fear and boundaries. They additionally, discover more about themselves, those around them and their capabilities, they empower young female respondents to break the stereotypes around them and be fearless in the face of adversity. “The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants” is an inspiring movie where I learnt about the importance of strength for purpose, determination for accomplishment and love for friends who encourage you throughout your life, especially during your crucial years at high school.

If you’re looking for a compassionate, amiable and surprisingly touching movie, where the composer will take you on a journey of accompaniment through the phases of adolescence this is definitely for you. (You will most likely relate to the diverse themes throughout)
