book review

Rachael taught us that passion, faith and obsession are what we need to keep us going.

Hello! My name is Barbara, and I am completely hooked with ‘Spark’ by Rachael Craw. It makes my heart thump loud and sparks my imagination! This novel is definitely a page-turner! A book that I will definitely recommend to you.

The novel is a sci-fi/fantasy text, and is based on the interesting concept of genetic modification on DNA cells. As we all know, science can be so amazing, and with these new DNA cells discovered in the blood of the protagonist Evangeline Everton, she becomes a shield. Being a shield means that her responsibility is to protect the person that she is assigned to, which in this case is her best friend. Evangeline needs to protect her best friend from a stray. The stray, on the other hand, is designed to kill her assigned individual. After each mission is accomplished, she is to report to the Affinity, who then assigns her a complete new person, or someone that she knows, to defend and protect. This process goes over and over again until she is killed. Evangeline obtains a remarkable set of skills through her priming period, and of course has a complicated love story, which is for you to find out when you get to read the book!

Evangeline is definitely my favourite character because she is a very beautiful and intelligent woman. Although she goes through many struggles, she still maintains the strength and bravery to overcome any fears or pain she experiences. She also learns to love others and herself by embracing both her positive and negative experiences. I love the structure of Craw’s writing, it’s clear but still maintains its sophistication through the complex concept of genetic modification on DNA. This book is very hard to put down once I’ve picked it up, and is definitely at the top of my list for the best books I’ve read. If you love anything to do with tragic, heroic, smart, beautiful characters, then this novel is perfect for you!
