book review

Holly taught us that books are living things, and as living things, they need to be protected.

The Cruel Prince

Hello my fellow readers,

Be aware this review may contain spoilers. It is not my fault, it just slips out.

Today I would like to talk about my favourite book at the moment… The Cruel Prince.

This highly anticipated book is one of my all time favourites, however re-reading it has made me gain a new found love for the 2018 book. With a good mix of fantasy and romance, it is different from other YA novels due to the female not being a damsel in distress searching for who she really is, instead she is a strong woman who fights her own battles, the male instead of being brooding is coping with his alcohol problem and being stupid. This heartfelt book comes out once a year and I am steadily waiting for the final book to conclude my two-year suffering.

The protagonist Jude is the warrior daughter of an elven/goblin man who killed her real father and mother and took her and her sisters in as a way to raise them and his real daughter Vivi. As she couldn't really fit into society she made a way to become noticed, this made her a target to Prince Cardan and his clan of mean bullies. However, as you go through the story you realise that Carden is really a misunderstood, beautiful, stupid prince who has been abandoned by his own family. Moreover, Jude makes him feel emotions that he doesn't want, which I picked up obviously (he wrote her name on a piece of paper over and over, how’s that for productivity?) and the one you believe is the good guy is actually a complete jerk… just saying.

Holly Black, Author

I feel like Holly Black wants to show the audience the stereotypical gender roles reversed and that people that are broken can be improved, not fixed. This is a great message as Black wants to reveal how everybody has problems in this book that they need to deal with, from abandonment problems to the need to prove themselves in a world where humans are seen as inferior and breakable.

This is my secret book that I got on the day it came out and I would recommend this book to any Fairy lovers, who are also into a twisted tale of love and betrayal.

If you haven't sensed my love and obsession for this book, I rate it 5 out of 5 stars because I cannot stop thinking about how it may end. If you have read the Cruel Prince and the second book The Wicked King, the conclusion Queen of Nothing comes out on November 19. I am counting down the days!!!!!

Till next time, keep reading!!!
