book review

Neil taught us that hope in the shadow of fear is the world's most powerful motivator.

Hello my fellow readers,

Books are a keyhole into a different world, if it be the past, the future or a different galaxy. Today I will be writing about a book that incorporates all of the above into one novel, except the galaxy thing. Anyway, Scythe by Neal Shusterman revolves around the role of the scythes in the modern world. They are the only ones who can take life so that the population can be controlled.

Practically the story revolves around a girl named Citra and a boy named Rowan. They are normal one day and then, because of one deed they did for the unknown hidden figure in a robe, they are cast into the world of scythes!!! Now they have the chance to become one of the council members of scythes. However, they first have to learn the art of killing without letting their growing attraction to each other get in the way.

Well this book is not all about their journey, but also about the scythes’ secrets which could ultimately lead to the end of their utopian world. That means death could exist without having to be reaped, illness may come back and the world could even end.

Without giving too much away let's talk about the characters…

Citra Terranova is a tough girl, or so she seems who only wants to fit in. But in the world she lives in she can’t help but feel like she was made to be different. As a scythe in training, she is definitely an inspiration of what girls can be, she isn't desperate for a man to save her, rather she takes charge and stands up for what she believes in.

Rowan Damisch is the male protagonist who has to challenge Citra for the one place in the Scythedom, he is very empathetic and I feel like everyone needs a Rowan in their life because he is so nice but a bit awkward. When it comes to him being a scythe, his journey is one of the toughest and there is a lot of challenges he has to overcome such as his training to kill without empathy.

Honorable Scythe Faraday is the trainer for Citra and Rowan, he is kind and loves to teach both of them and watch them grow into the adults that he always thought they could be. He is like their father that they never had and is definitely one of my favourite characters.

Neal Shusterman, Author

This book is a tale that grips you to the very last page and leaves you wanting more. It is definitely one of my favourites and you have to rush into the library before someone else borrows it (or me)!!!

If I had to rate this book I would give it a 4.5/5 because of the gripping plot twists and the connection I felt to the characters. Scythe by Neal Shusterman is one of my favourite books and I recommend it to all teenagers.

That's all I’ve got for today so keep a look out for my next review.
