Partial Solar Eclipse Viewing Information for Jackson County High School

Dear Jackson County High School Families,

On Monday, April 8, a total solar eclipse will cross the United States, passing over Texas, and traveling through Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. A total solar eclipse happens when the moon passes between the sun and earth, completely blocking the face of the sun. The sky will darken as if it were dawn or dusk.

In Georgia, and specifically here in Jackson County, a partial solar eclipse is expected to take place approximately between 1:45 and 4:20 p.m., with the maximum viewing time around 3:05 p.m. This is all dependent on the weather conditions that day. The Jackson County School System will operate on a normal school schedule that day, providing educational opportunities for students to explore the various facets of an eclipse.

The eclipse time does take place during school dismissal and no organized eclipse viewing activities are planned for that day. Students departing campuses on buses and as car riders will be reminded by school leaders and staff to avoid looking directly at the eclipse. We have included some additional information in the links below regarding the eclipse. If you have any further questions or need additional information, please don't hesitate to reach out.

 Governor's Honors Program Finalist

We're excited to announce that Jackson County High School Sophomore Julia Crowthers has been named a 2024 Governor’s Honors Program (GHP) Finalist in Science!

In a highly competitive selection process, Julia stood out among 3,200 nominees statewide, with only approximately 1,400 students advancing to the interview stage. This prestigious recognition is a testament to Julia's exceptional skills and dedication in the field of chemistry.

The Georgia GHP is an esteemed residential summer program designed for gifted and talented high school students, where participants engage in specialized instruction beyond the traditional classroom setting. Julia will be joining fellow scholars at Georgia Southern University this summer, delving into a diverse array of academic, cultural, and social experiences aimed at fostering critical thinking, innovation, and leadership skills.

Julia's selection for this program is a testament to her outstanding achievements and potential. We couldn't be prouder of her and this remarkable accomplishment!
