Today's agenda:

  • Today students began working in Unit 2 lesson 1. In this unit students will be learning the verb tener (to have), the classes students attend in high school, how to create a daily schedule, how to tell time, how to share at what time things take place, how to conjugate basic --ar action verbs, and the meaning of several --ar action verbs.

  • For starters I spent quite a bit of time explaining how to tell time. Telling time in Spanish requires students to know the numbers 0-30 well. The question Que hora es? means what time is it? To tell time, the speaker simply says, Son las....y.....using the hours and the minutes to tell the time in the first half hour of the hour. For example:

6:05 in Spanish is son las seis y cinco

7:10 in Spanish is son las siete y diez

8:15 in Spanish is son las ocho y quince. Students can also say son las ocho y cuarto (cuarto means 1/4 hour, as 8:15 is 8 and a 1/4 hour)

9:20 in Spanish is son las nueve y veinte.

10:25 in Spanish is son las diez y veinticinco.

11:30 in Spanish is son las once y treinta. Students can also say son las once y media(media means 1/2 hours, as 11:30 is 11 and a 1/2 hour)

When telling time, once the minute hand passes the 30 minute (or 1/2 hour), we now go to the next hour and use menos for the minutes. For examples:

2:35 in Spanish is son las tres menos veinticinco (in other words 2:35 in English is 3 minus 25 minutes or 25 until 3:00)

3:40 in Spanish is son las cuatro menos veinte.

4:45 in Spanish is son las cinco menos quince. Students can also say son las cinco menos cuarto(cuarto means 1/4 hour, as 4:45 is 5 minus a 1/4 hour).

5:50 in Spanish is son las seis menos diez.

6:55 in Spanish is son las siete menos cinco.

When expressing at what time something takes place, a speaker uses the phrase a las instead of son las

So to express that someone has a class at

I have a class at 7:05 in Spanish is Yo tengo una clase a las cinco y cinco.

I have a class at 8:40 in Spanish is Yo tengo una clase a las nueve menos veinte.

  • Students practiced telling time and stating at what time classes took place by doing card pass alongs. I recommend students who were absent 10/25-26 come by at lunchtime this week to see the pass along cards and catch up on the telling time concepts.

  • Lastly students learned the verb tener-to have

Yo tengo Nosotros tenemos

Tu tienes

El, Ella Ellos, Ellas, Ustedes, multiple people tienen

usted tiene

any person

Our goal today was to learn to create a complete sentence telling what class a person has and at what time. For example:

Jose has a Spanish class at 8:15 a.m.

Jose tiene una clase de espanol a las ocho y quince de la manana.
