BROOKLYN LIBRARY BOOKMATCH TEEN PROGRAM (UNPAID)

WHO: High school Students between the ages of 9 and 12

WHAT: Learn the art of recommending books from librarians, book selectors, publishers and authors, and offer a readers’ advisory service exclusive to teens. Represent BPL at events and select books to be added to the Library’s collection!  Program takes place weekly Wednesdays in November and December for training, followed by bimonthly meetings and live book matching at BPL events through early June. The program is in person at Brooklyn Public Library's Central Library, located at 10 Grand Army Plaza in Brooklyn.

WHEN: Eight Wednesdays in November and December for training, followed by 2-3 times a month and live book matching at BPL events through early June.

CLIMATE AND RESILIENCE EDUCATION TASK FORCE YOUTH STEERING COMMITTEE (PAID)

WHO: NYC high school students ages 15-19

WHAT: Our YSC is a community of like-minded high school students who want to advocate for quality climate education for current and future generations of students in New York. Students learn how to:

• Take concrete action to expand access to climate education in NY schools

• Work on a state-level climate education policy campaign

• Help to build a network of youth dedicated to climate justice education

• Communicate with educators, NGOs, policymakers, and other experts in the field

WHERE: Meetings will take place via Zoom to accommodate students in education-related collaborative projects. 

WHEN:  Participation runs from September to June.

SADIE NASH LEADERSHIP PROJECT COLLEGE READINESS PROGRAM (PAID) 

WHO: High School students who identify as a young woman or gender expansive young person

WHAT: Sadie Nash Leadership Project’s mission is to strengthen, empower, and equip young women and gender-expansive* youth of color as agents for change in their lives and in the world. Operating at the intersection of love and rigor, we use popular education to build community, critical consciousness, and college and career readiness among participants, whom we call Nashers. Our vision is of a world that centers the experiences and leadership of young women and gender-expansive youth of color, building on their perspective, commitment, and brilliance to be a healthier, safer, and more just society for us all. 

Different Programs offered:

- ELLA Fellowship: Must currently be age 18-22

- Siblinghood Academy: Must currently be in 9 - 12th grade

- Leadership Scholars: Must currently be in 10th or 11th grade (class of 2027 or 2028)

- Nash U: Must currently be in high school or older

URBAN ARTS 2D GAME DEVELOPMENT (UNPAID)

WHO: High school students in 10th,11th,12th grade who have scored 80 or higher on a Regents

WHAT: Game Academy is an award-winning, three-level game design and computer science program for high school students looking for college preparatory STEM opportunities. In the first course, 2D Game Development, you will code and design your first video game prototype using Unity3D—an interactive media engine used widely within the game industry. Coursework includes C# programming with Unity3D, 2D pixel art and sprite animation, digital music and sound FX, and narrative writing.

Our tuition-free model allows our admissions process to focus exclusively on recruiting the students with the strongest interest to learn, regardless of family income.
