WHAT: The High School Division of the Sonia & Celina Sotomayor Judicial Internship Program (The Sotomayor Program) encourages diverse and underrepresented high school students from communities among the five New York City boroughs to pursue careers in the law. Selected students will spend the summer interning for a state or federal judge in New York City while participating in supplemental educational programming, college preparation, and mentorship opportunities. The Sotomayor Program is open to and encourages applications from all eligible candidates.

WHO: Current 9th-12th graders girls and nonbinary students.
WHAT: If you’ve ever thought about running your own business, inventing something new, or being part of a movement to create change in the world, Bossgirls is for you! You’ll join a community of other bossgirls like yourself to discover entrepreneurship. You and a team of other bossgirls will focus on a problem, come up with an innovative solution for it, research the market, compare competitors, learn how to price your product & prototype it, and create a brand around your idea. At the end of the program, you’ll pitch your idea to an audience--think Shark Tank without the sharks. All the while, you’ll get to meet entrepreneurs & get advice from expert mentors from Standard Chartered, our program sponsor. And just so your parents know... our goal is to introduce entrepreneurship to you as not only a possible career path, but a mindset that advances any course of learning. Our curriculum puts the customer first, introducing you to a human-centered design approach to problem-solving. You’ll learn how to analyze a problem and find a business opportunity within it. Plus, having this on your resume or college application looks great! Bossgirls is a summer entrepreneurship program from the Zahn Innovation Center at The City College of New York (CCNY) for high school. The program is fully sponsored by Standard Chartered, as part of its Futuremakers Initiative.

WHAT: Are you interested in anti-censorship advocacy? Students ages 14-19 are invited to apply for the upcoming four-day, in-person Freedom to Read Advocacy Institute to connect with peers to discuss book challenges, censorship, and intellectual freedom. Have fun while exploring how to be an effective intellectual freedom advocate in your community. Participants will receive a $200 stipend for completing the institute and continuing to work on advocacy projects throughout the year as Freedom to Read Teen Ambassadors.
WHEN: The next Institute is during the midwinter break (February 18–21, 2025).
Ambassadors will then meet in-person every Tuesday until June from 5–6:30 pm

WHAT: The mission of the NYS Unified Court System is to deliver equal justice under the law and to achieve the just, fair and timely resolution of all matters that come before the courts. To promote civic education and readiness, we have developed an Internship Program for high school and undergraduate college students that enhances students’ fundamental understanding of the court system and the role of courts in the function of government. Interns are provided the opportunity to integrate classroom education and theory with practical and relevant career experience. Interns will gain insight regarding the work of judges, attorneys, court clerks, court reporters, court officers, interpreters, and other professionals and receive hands-on experience in the work of the courts. We are committed to providing an interactive program where participants are involved in various aspects of court operations and will develop a concrete understanding of the Judiciary, civil, family, and criminal justice systems, and the roles of professionals working in service of our mission. Participants will be exposed to court processes; educated on applicable laws, rules, and protocols; and informed about careers available within the Judiciary. Students will also acquire an understanding on ethical and professional practices and Code of Conduct for employees; receive hands-on experience under the supervision of experienced professionals; and gain civic knowledge to serve the public good as members of a culturally diverse, democratic society. Candidates should have an interest in working and learning about the justice system and/or legal profession.

WHAT:YA-YA Network Spring 2025 Facilitation Bootcamp is a 10-week training program designed to teach young activists the necessary skill of leading dialogues about the issues that matter most to their communities. In this program, you will learn how to: activate the art of facilitation as a tool for collective change, lead conversations that engage your community, teach your friends, family, and others to challenge systems of oppression, inspire folks to brainstorm inclusive solutions that uplift us all, AND share your story of self, and how it informs your facilitation practice. Facilitation Bootcamp will also serve as the entry point into the more advanced Facilitation Squad, where participants will have the opportunity to venture outside of YA-YA to lead workshops, help grow our community, and contribute to our core curriculum.There is a stipend for successful completion of the bootcamp.

This annual event is usually held in early February.The WCS Youth JIVE is an interactive opportunity for youth (ages 14-26) to learn about paid and unpaid positions at our New York City Zoos and Aquarium (BRONX ZOO, CENTRAL PARK ZOO, PROSPECT PARK ZOO, QUEENS ZOO, AND THE NEW YORK AQUARIUM). Participants will attend workshops and meet directly with hiring managers.14- and 15-year-olds can learn more about volunteer opportunities and how to use volunteer positions as a springboard into paid positions down the line.16-26 year olds can meet hiring managers and learn about the many jobs, internships, and volunteer opportunities available at the WCS Zoos and Aquarium.

WHAT: MITES (formerly OEOP) provides transformative experiences that bolster confidence, create lifelong community, and build an exciting, challenging foundation in STEM for highly motivated 7th–12th grade students from diverse and underrepresented backgrounds. Catalyzing change in STEM, our goal is to advance equity and access through hands-on programs that are free of cost to participants and their families. GATEWAY SPOTLIGHTS
Our students learned what it was like to work in the industry and discovered the many possible careers designers and animators can go into. Jessica spoke about the importance of internships, developing soft skills, college opportunities and networking; making connections for future job opportunities.
Our 9th grade students put on an amazing performance of Animal Farm in the Auditorium, It was outstanding. Best one yet.
