YOUTH GARDEN APPRENTICE PROGRAM (UNPAID)
WHO: 9th, 10th, 11th Graders who live in Brooklyn. Priority will be given to students who live or attend school in East Flatbush, Canarsie, Brownsville, Flatlands or Flatbush
WHAT: The Youth Garden Apprentice Program (GAP) provides first-hand experience cultivating organic vegetables, herbs, flowers, and perennials on our 1.25 acre site. The garden includes raised beds for seasonal vegetables and medicinal herbs, as well as fruit and nut trees, wildflowers, roses, and native plants. You will learn alongside qualified gardeners/urban farmers, fellow apprentices, and community members of all ages.
Responsibilities include: soil cultivation, weeding, pruning, watering, planting, mulching, composting, cover cropping, harvesting, managing farm tools, engaging with community volunteers and on-site visitors, leading open-garden volunteer days, assisting with farmers markets and participation in farm-based workshops. Apprentices will engage with materials relating to gardening and the ways our urban food system operates.

EARTH MATTER YOUTH INTERNSHIP (UNPAID) Deadline: 05/31/25
EARTH MATTER YOUTH INTERNSHIP (UNPAID)
WHO: High school students ages 16-18
WHAT: Youth participants (ages 16-18 yrs.) will acquire 80 hours of hands-on, practical skills related to composting, animal care, farming, resource recovery, and conservation. Earth Matter interns will build leadership, environmental stewardship skills, and peer relationships.
The internship primarily takes place at Earth Matter’s Compost Learning Center, Soil Start Farm, and Lavender Field on Governors Island, with Earth Matter staff, adult apprentices, and volunteers. Offsite field trips will provide opportunities to visit Earth Matter partner organizations' compost/farm sites and have joint work days with their youth interns. Lastly, youth interns will participate in at least one street tree bed service project.

WHEN: The internship will consist of 80 hours between May until the end of October. Schedule will be agreed upon between Earth Matter staff and the intern. Each shift is a 5-8 hour day, including some weekend shifts.

Discovery, with the goal of producing high-concept and impactful marketing campaigns for MAX original content, through an interactive design thinking approach.
