Language Barrier Between Player Characters & Henchman NPCs:

This should only be checked against when characters and/or henchmen npcs first meet. Afterwards this could get distracting, so assume the characters have made some progress to get past most language barriers after the first day or two of traveling together. Role playing the language difficulties is highly encourages and the GM should reward players doing so with extra XP. You could describe hand movements and body language the characters use to simulate the words they don't know how to otherwise express to each other.

Linguistics Rolls:

When encountering a new individual, if you do not know their language, make a Linguistics check. Once you successfully make a check for an INDIVIDUAL you do not need to make another check when talking to that INDIVIDUAL. This does not give you the language, but you are familiar enough with how that person speaks to not need to roll again. With enough repeated success using linguistics without failing to check on a language your character does not possess, the GM should award the language, given enough time.

Linguistics Natural 20 Roll:

If you ever make a Natural 20 when trying to interpret someone's language, you are may add that language to your character sheet and no longer need to make Linguistics checks against that language in the future unless an individual speaking it has a very strange accent and/or speech impediment.

Learning Languages in downtime:

If a player character has indicated he/she wishes to learn a language that is spoken either by another character or by npcs in group or settlement and the characters will be in close proximity to each other during the downtime between games, they make a Linguistics check to see if they picked up the language.

+1 bonus for every Player Character that speaks the language the character wishes to learn.

+1 for every 10 NPCs in a community the characters are staying in who speak the language the character wishes to learn. (If they are allowed to interact.)

-1 for how far apart the language is from any known languages of the character on the "Lanuages of Carcosa" image below.

If the character spends a skill point (earned at certain levels) he/she does not need to roll and it automatic as long as there is a teacher of the language.

The Chart below gives an idea of the branching off of the languages from their origin. If you speak a language on the chart and need to figure out the difficulty of another language on the chart, there is a plus five to the difficulty for each bubble you move between. For example: If a character fluent in Carcosa Black Man wished to try to understand Aklo ~ high Serpent Man, the penalty would be five times the four bubbles difference, equals a twenty on the difficulty.

Space Alien is a twenty difficulty for anyone not fluent in it.

Some Main Shub-Spawn race languages are even more difficult.

Primordial One Language should be difficulty thirty due to how vastly alien it is.

Voormis & White Ape should be treated as two bubbles extra from Gaunt Man ~ Debase Carcosan City Speak, modified by bubbles difference in language that is understood by the character.
