Course Overview and Materials
This course is one of two courses students can complete to fulfill the Grade 12 English Language Arts requirement to earn their Alberta High School Diploma. The course is often taken by students who plan to apply to post-secondary programs at a university or some colleges and trade schools. It is an appropriately challenging and rigorous course as outlined by Alberta Education. In English 30-1, students will study a variety of text mediums (poetry, visuals, short stories, non-fiction, Shakespearean play, film, and novel) and have the opportunity to respond in a variety of text forms (personal and critical, prose, poetry, script, oral/visual/multimedia presentation) to showcase their understanding of how the English Language is used to convey thoughts and emotions. The course includes a number of timed, remotely proctored assessments (including essays and reading comprehension) as part of each unit. The course is designed to fully prepare students for success on the diploma exam.
There is no final exam in this course. Students are, however, required to write both parts of the English 30-1 diploma exam. Both the course mark and diploma exam mark are required for a final mark to appear on their transcript.
In order for a student to be successful in this course, VVS requires a minimum of 65% in the prerequisite course.
You are responsible for obtaining a copy of the films required in the course. VVS does not stock films.
Away From Her (2006) is a required film in addition to one other film choice. The teacher will provide the list of choices for the additional film once the student has registered in the course. This information will initially be provided in the teacher’s welcome letter.
