Sadlier Vocabulary Workshop
Word Associations p. 160 and Completing the Idea p.161
Last week, we started to dig deeper into our reading of nonfiction books on Ancient Egypt! We are going to continue to do that this week, making sure we check for understanding while we read.
Remember, when we read a chunk in a nonfiction book, we should check in with ourselves to see if we understand.
Check out the video below to see how I do it!
Why did they build the pyramids?
The pyramids were built as burial places and monuments to the Pharaohs. As part of their religion, the Egyptians believed that the Pharaoh needed certain things to succeed in the afterlife. Deep inside the pyramid the Pharaoh would be buried with all sorts of items and treasure that he may need to survive in the afterlife.
STOP -- What did I just read? Or What was this part of the text about?
When a pharaoh died, they buried him or her in a pyramid. In order to live in the afterlife, they would need certain things. So, they would bury those things with the pharaoh.

Activity: Now make a paper spinner that spins like the maple seed in the puppet show: Go to this website: https://www.exploratorium.edu/science_explorer/roto-copter.html . Print the Roto-Copter pattern. (If you can't print it, draw one just like the ones shown.) Follow the directions to put it together. Important: cut on the SOLID lines only, and fold on the DOTTED lines only. When it's done, drop it to make it spin.
