AI Large Language Model (LLM) Guidance

This information was recently added to Artificial Intelligence in Frisco ISD. 

What is PII?

PII is Personally Identifiable Information. It may include:

• Names

• Birthdates

• Email address

• Or any other personally-identifiable information

Is it safe to upload PII to any LLM?

Generally, it is not safe to upload personally identifiable information (PII) to free, unmanaged large language models (LLMs). Risks may include PII data being at-risk of data breaches or used to train LLMs and protections for your data may be very limited. The safest approach is to assume your data is not completely private when using a free, unmanaged LLM and avoid uploading any information you would not want to become public. 

What about paid-for or managed LLMs?

When uploading information to a paid-for or managed LLM there are stronger privacy and security guarantees. However, you should become familiar with each LLM’s specific data handling and privacy policies even for paid-for or managed accounts. Review the chart below before uploading PII to a LLM.
