Mission: The safety net in Wisconsin's mental health continuum.

Clientele: Staff provide recovery-oriented treatment to Wisconsin residents of all ages living with challenging behaviors and complex psychiatric conditions.

Services: All patients are referred by county health and human service agencies and the court system. WMHI serves children and adults court-ordered into inpatient psychiatric assessment treatment through county-based emergency detention and commitment proceedings. These individuals are referred to as civil patients. WMHI also serves individuals court-ordered for mental health competency evaluations, treatment to competency services, and found not guilty of criminal activity by reason of mental illness. These individuals are referred to as forensic patients. The majority of forensic patients served at WMHI are women.

Internship Description (120 Hours):

• Learn about different mental illnesses

• Learn about the laws and legal aspects concerning patients an mental illness

• Learn the difference of a civil and forensic commitment

• Learn about state career opportunities and how to apply for a state job

• Learn about Volunteer Services at the institute

• Tour the on grounds museum and help with projects

• Learn and follow policies and procedures in an institutional setting

• Establish a relationship with a patient and follow their case and progress

• Keep a log of experiences

Duties/responsibilities of the Internship student are the same as the Advanced Internship but to a lesser

degree

Advanced Internship Description (280 Hours):

• Learn about different mental illnesses
