In Love, Simon by Becky Albertalli, readers are brought into Simon’s perspective as he navigates his way through life. Not only does he have to deal with his fluctuating family and friend relationships, but also the possible outing of his sexuality. Whilst this is all happening, he confides in an online anonymous user who goes as “Blue,” and as they banter back and forth, they fall in love in the process. Through their messages, “Blue” encourages Simon to live courageously and embrace his truest and most authentic self, and the pair eventually get to take their digital romance offline and be together in real life.
This book was extremely moving, and it offered a heartfelt and vulnerable look into the importance of identity. This book gives insight into the fears of coming out and what it is like to feel outcasted as a gay person, so it is extremely educational as well. This heartwarming book is beautifully written, thus I would recommend it to anyone looking for a short but sweet read.
