A few years ago, Sunnybrook High broke apart the cheer squad after the tragic and heartbreaking deaths of five teenage girls. First came the car accident, where Colleen Coughlin and Bethany Steiger both died because they were speeding on a rainy evening. Next the murders occurred, killing Juliana Ruiz and Susan Berry, the night before the homecoming game. Susan’s strange neighbor was named the killer and was shot before he could confess why he did it. Moreover, Monica’s sister, Jennifer Rayburn, was supposed to sleepover at Susan’s that day but didn’t because she was ill. Sadly enough less than two months after the car crash, Jennifer took her own life and was the last cheerleader to die. The five year anniversary of these incidents are coming up and while everyone at school tries to remember them, Monica wants to forget every single detail. That isn’t so easy though because new details are emerging around the deaths of the cheerleaders. Haunting secrets are uncovered from people she thought she knew. That is why Monica is in the middle of it all, trying to sort through years old information for answers and the truth.
This young adult thriller is beautifully written with captivating characters that intertwine emotional stories with horrific details. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this novel because each event that occurred wasn’t too predictable so it made me want to know what was going to happen next. Also, not every chapter is told by the same person which creates a mysterious and suspenseful environment for readers. Moreover, this book provides a truthful, but descriptive insight which further engages the audience. In each and every moment, a new problem, fact, or lie arises so The Cheerleaders will make viewers question why news from five years ago isn’t over yet.

This novel is told through the point of view of a siren named Ira, daughter of the Sea Queen, who is infamously known for killing princes. When she disobeys her mother, she is punished by transforming into a human. Then, she is discovered floating out on sea by a siren killer named Elian. Instead of killing Elian, Lira chooses to stay around. They become unlikely companions with a common goal- but the question is, can Elian trust her?
I was surprised by how amazing this storytelling was. I adored Lira and Elian’s relationship from the beginning of the novel to the end. These are the types of love interests that made me enjoy reading. The secondary characters aboard the ship also added humor and spark to the storyline. If you enjoy slow-burn romance novels with a fantasy backdrop, then this is the story for you.

Educated is the true story of the author, Tara Westover. She was born to a survivalist family in the mountains of Idaho. Her father distrusted the medical system so every single wound or burn was treated with natural herbs that her mother stewed. Her family was so isolated from the rest of the world that nobody even bothered to ensure that her or her siblings received an education. However, after some unfortunate incidents, she decides to change her life. Tara works hard and becomes an independent and passionate woman achieving what she wanted, finally becoming the author of her memoir.
I came across this book when I was looking for something interesting to read during the summer. I read through the summary and it looked very interesting especially because it was the author’s autobiography. Her story was so inspiring and I believe it is a book that many more people need to read. Most importantly, it teaches the readers about the importance of education and how many people take it for granted. It is a great perspective to see one’s journey through new eyes and would definitely recommend it for anybody who is looking for a different type of genre.
