“The Metamorphosis”, by Franz Kafka, is a masterpiece! The story is such an odd, twisted concept that feels like something straight out of a Tim Burton film. Gregor lived a depressing life as a salesman, where his responsibilities weighed heavily down on him to support his family; Mom, Dad, and his sister Grete. One day, he wakes up to find that he has turned into an oversized cockroach, and it looks as if he will have to rely on his family’s help for a change. It soon becomes apparent that the true metamorphosis was not only Gregor’s odd transformation, but it was also the drastic change that became of his family.
This was absolutely remarkable. I loved how interpretive the story was. Moreso, it even had a nice sense of humor that kept me wanting to read more, as well as a tinge of horror elements to make you feel closer to the characters. In case you couldn’t tell, I would highly recommend this to anyone.

The main character of the novel, Gregor, is a travelling salesman whose work is critical to his family because he has to pay off his parent’s debt. This changes one morning. When he told his mother that he will be out of the room shortly, he noticed that his voice was raspy as he struggled to speak. It’s revealed that he transformed into a human-sized cockroach. Gregor realizes that he is helpless and can’t get out of his situation, therefore he has to adapt. He will slowly become more cockroach than human as the story continues.
Kafka’s purpose is to cause readers to think about why Gregor reacts the way he does than why the situation happened in the first place. This centers around Gregor’s feelings as a human being rather than a simple-minded cockroach. Gregor’s perspective gives a level of absurdity to the reader because of the strange events that took place. It makes the reader wonder what the consequences of his transformation will lead to. I definitely recommend this book to those who want to gain a different perspective of the world.
