With more than 35 years of professional experience, my work has taken me to many places, in the UK and world-wide. Engineering geology has one big benefit in this regard - the geologist needs to go and look at the ground and geomorphology. We can do much by remote sensing, but hands-on examination in the field, ideallly with other members of a project team, has enormous benefits.
I am on the management board of Atkins' Ground Engineering business which has close links to other Atkins business units, such as energy, infrastructure (roads, rail, water), urban development and the environmental disciplines.
I am a Past President of the Geological Society of London (2012 to 2014), the UK national society for geoscience. The Society provides a wide range of professional and scientific support to over 11,000 Fellows (members), about 2,000 of whom live overseas. About 2,500 Fellows are also Chartered Geologists.
Mera Peak, Nepal - The Caterpillar Walking Club: Some 20 years ago I was a member of a party that successfully reached the summit of Mera Peak, which is close to Mt. Everest and has a height of 21,247 feet. A wonderful experience - the ultimate geology field trip, perhaps?

1988 – Present (26 years)
I am Technical Director for Engineering Geology at Atkins Ltd, a major employer of geologists and geoscientists, where I manage and contribute to a wide range of geotechnical and geoenvironmental projects. I am a Chartered Geologist, Chartered Scientist and European Geologist. I am also an associate/affiliate member of the Institution of Cilvil Engineers and of the Institute for Archaeologists.
My geological interests lie not only in the professional engineering geology and applied geohazards work that I do at Atkins, but also in the wide range of pure and applied subjects that together comprise geology - from geomorphology to tectonics, and from geological materials to palaeoecology.
I have appeared as an expert in international construction disputes (arbitrations and dispute resolution hearings) for projects in Bahrain, Indonesia, Trinidad and Finland.
I established an archaeological consultancy within Atkins, and our capabilities have grown into a heritage team that is now a division within our planning and environmental businesses.
I have been the author or co-author of more than 20 technical papers and conference presentations, mostly on geohazards and engineering geology for slope stability and cross-country pipelines, with a few on geotechnical engineering on archaeological sites and recently on the LUSI Mud Volcano in Java.
