After placing the seeds in a pouch, you set out to your next destination: the Medics' Gardens of the great city of Verdalia. Alster, as a healer, was particularly excited as he loved the gardens and had spent many hours in quiet study there. When you arrive, you discover that the etheria is overrunning the building here, too. The plants have turned the once peaceful garden into a wild tangled jungle! Alster is heart broken as the gardens are a site of research and learning and all that could be destroyed. Sprites float among the branches and leaves.
You soon learn from one of the Medic's Gardens healers that they're having trouble supplying water for all the plants. "They're growing so quickly and competing with each other for their survival, and some are even dying as a result. I've asked the council to increase the water supply but we don't have the capacity to deliver what more than we are getting already.
Talik looks to you and Haden. "Maybe we can pull more water from underground?" She says. Haden responds with, "Or maybe we can stop the growth again with the help of our magical Ivy. Where is she?" Ivy had already flitted off to see all of the incredible plants collected from around Solea in the Medic's Gardens. It was beyond any collection in the archipelago. The excessive growth and energy being absorbed by the trees and plants pulled Ivy away and any many sprites who were at first attracted to the site were overwhelmed and confused.
Without Ivy you had to come up with an alternate solution. If you had a water mage in the group it would have been easy but as Talik's speciality was fire she was not well practised in water charms and knew no water sprites. "Don't go summoning any sprites to do with fire, they'll just make things hot and we'll need more water or burn things down." You say to Talik half joking. Your speciality was possibly more useful as it was around earth and you did know some things that might help but it wasn't a perfect fit. You summon an earth sprite and try your best to communicate your need of a way to get more water into the gardens. Richalt came in handy yet again as he was able to clear things up and a simple earth sprite was able to spin furiously at one point in the gardens and soon had drilled a tunnel to one of the aquifers feeding Lake Vera there was a deep rumble before water came gushing up like a fountain at its digging site before covering the grounds and filling the intricate systems of canals and channels that feed the gardens. The water was a stop gap measure but it wasn't slowing the growth of all the plants. After witnessing the emergency irrigation, Ivy saw the importance we were placing on keeping the gardens alive and somehow using her connection to its elemental power to connect with the sprites gathered in the garden, pull them away from their over attraction and helped them to pull up trickles of water from the flowing water. The plants of the gardens respond instantly, their vines and branches moving away from each other and out of the deep ground where we imagined another out of control humming crystal must have been buried which fed this garden.
Once again, the sprites in the gardens noticed your pure and sincere actions and some of them flit away and return with more glowing seeds.
"Sprites and etheria are part of the same ecosystem," Richalt says. "They must appreciate that we're helping the plants. But these seeds … what are they for? I've never seen anything like them. Alster, you are the master here, any ideas about these seeds?
"I have been looking at them since we received some at the observatory, they are almost certainly a type of crystallum abor etherialis, but I haven't seen this variety before. Whatever it is I get the feeling that they are important.
You can't help but wonder the same thing. What do the sprites want you to do with them?
Reread the story carefully. All these words are in the text. The clues for 10 down and 11 down were cut off! Sorry about that...I added them to the bottom of the puzzle. Solve this puzzle and submit your answers in the Thy Quests section.
10 Down, The colour of the sprite in the picture.
