Zelnard knelt down in the sand, his small hands reaching out to the teegwin. It was delicate, its leather-like skin rough against his palms, and its tiny jaws opened in a mock attempt at ferocity, flashing rows of needle-like teeth that were more endearing than intimidating. The creature tried to twist away, but Zelnard’s gentle grip was firm. He lifted it carefully, feeling its slight weight in his hands, and for a moment, the teegwin stilled, as if recognizing that this boy meant it no harm. Zelnard could feel the little creature’s heart beating rapidly, and in that moment, he understood the teegwin’s fear of the water and the death it could bring. He felt an unexpected kinship with the tiny animal, both of them displaced and struggling to survive.**
Zelnard knew he needed to return the teegwin to safety, somewhere far from the saltwater that threatened its life. He glanced at the river, where the current was strong but the water was fresh, a place where the teegwin might find its way home. He set off, carefully cradling the creature as he trudged across the beach, over a dune, and up the riverbank. The ground was uneven, covered in reeds and bracken that tugged at his clothes and scratched at his skin. He winced as the razor grass sliced at his legs, the sharp blades leaving thin, stinging cuts, but he pressed on, glancing down at the teegwin in his hands. The little creature blinked up at him, its eyes dark and trusting, and Zelnard knew it was worth the pain.
