Zelnard, out of breath and exhausted, could barely keep his head above water. His eyes widening as he saw the teegwin closing in. Panic surged through him, and he tried to swim to the bank, but his limbs were too weak, his leg hurting, air still absent from his lungs and now his body too tired. The teegwin’s eyes were locked onto Zelnard, its powerful tail propelling it forward, closing the distance between them with terrifying speed. Dunstor stood frozen, his earlier malice replaced with a mixture of horror and fascination. He knew what was about to happen, yet he did nothing, simply watching as the scene unfolded before him. As the teegwin got within a few metres of Zelnard, a shout rang out from the bank. Ferson and another boy had heard the commotion and arrived just in time to see the approaching predator and the prey , their missing boy, in the lagoon. Without hesitation, Ferson raised his hand, his fingers weaving through the air as he summoned the energy for a fire spell. The air around him crackled with heat as a ball of fire formed in his palm, bright and searing. With a sharp flick of his wrist, Ferson sent the fireball hurtling toward the teegwin.
The fireball struck the water just in front of the teegwin’s snout, exploding in a burst of steam and light. The teegwin recoiled, its smooth body twisting away from the heat, and with a powerful flick of its tail, it disappeared back into the depths of the river, leaving Zelnard unharmed but still struggling in the water. The other boy, not wasting a moment, pushed past Dunstor and rushed to the edge of the bank reaching out, his hand grasping Zelnard’s wrist with a firm grip. He pulled with all his might, hauling Zelnard across the water and onto the safety of the muddy shore.
