The three boys continued their game, each trying to outdo the others with increasingly elaborate displays of their powers. But as the competition heated up, a boy named Liefro approached, watching them from a distance. Liefro was a year younger than Zelnard and not as skilled in his magic yet and he was definitely not as confident as the other three. Everyone comes to the Zouken monastery for different reasons and the talk was he was there because his parents had treated him badly and they had lost the right to raise him. He had always been on the outskirts of the group, wanting to join in but never quite finding the courage to ask.
Today, however, he mustered the nerve. "Can I play too?" Liefro asked, his voice hesitant.
The boys paused, exchanging glances. Zelnard, still riding the adrenaline of the competition, shrugged dismissively. "This game’s for those who can keep up. Maybe when you’re better with your powers."
Gavid snickered. "Yeah, we don’t need anyone slowing us down."
Abah, not wanting to be left out, added, "Maybe next time, Liefro." But he felt bad as Abah was his roommate and desk partner for half the day.
Liefro’s face fell. He turned away, trying to hide his disappointment, and walked off toward the beach and Crystal Quay. The boys barely noticed, too caught up in their game.
Light rain began to fall by mid morning soon turned into a constant drip of water everywhere. As that amount of water made the game untenable, the ground unmoveable and their capes heavy, they gave up and went indoors.
What was really happening here with the boys when Gavid and Abah added their comments. Explain in Thy Quests to continue.
