Sport Lisboa e Benfica, comunemente noto come Benfica, ha sede a Lisbona e gioca nella Liga Portuguesa de Basquetebol (LPB).
Creata nel 1927, è la rappresentativa senior della sezione di basket del club polisportivo SL Benfica. Nel giugno 2007, il club ha deciso di lasciare la massima serie professionistica, allora conosciuta come LCB, e unirsi alla Proliga, una lega organizzata dalla Federazione portoghese di pallacanestro. Dal 2008 in poi, sono tornati alla LPB dopo che la federazione ha assunto la dirigenza della competizione.
Il Benfica è il club portoghese di maggior successo, con il record di più campionati, coppe, coppe di lega, supercoppe e altre competizioni nazionali, con un totale di 80 titoli nazionali. È anche la squadra portoghese che è andata più avanti nel campionato europeo per club, ora noto come Euroleague.

Insieme alle sue numerose squadre giovanili che giocano nei rispettivi campionati di massima divisione, il Benfica ha anche una squadra di basket in fase di sviluppo, il Benfica B, che gioca nella Proliga, la seconda serie più alta in Portogallo dopo la LPB, in cui gareggia la squadra principale.
Costituita il 20 marzo 1927, la squadra di basket seguì le orme di molti altri sport del club, ottenendo quasi subito un grande successo. La squadra si affermò come principale contendente negli anni '40 e durante tutti gli anni '60 ottenne lo status di favorita del campionato ed era già il club con il maggior numero di titoli vinti. A questo punto il club aveva vinto otto campionati nazionali e otto coppe.
Questo dominio è diminuito nel decennio successivo fino ai primi anni '80. In questo lasso di tempo il Benfica ha potuto vincere solo due campionati, nella stagione 1969/70 e 1974/75, ma ha vinto quattro coppe nazionali, il secondo torneo portoghese più prestigioso, nel 1969/70, 1971/72, 1972/73 e 1973/74. Dopo questi anni, il Benfica ha nuovamente dominato la scena nazionale.
Il periodo di maggior successo del club è stato tra il 1985 e il 1995. In undici stagioni, la squadra ha vinto dieci titoli nazionali, di cui sette di fila, cinque coppe nazionali, cinque coppe di campionato e sei supercoppe, ottenendo la migliore stagione di sempre di una squadra di basket portoghese nel 1994-1995 ha vinto il campionato portoghese, la Coppa di lega portoghese, la Supercoppa portoghese, la Coppa di basket portoghese e ha concluso la Coppa dei Campioni nella Top 16.
Uno dei momenti salienti di quella stagione di Coppa dei Campioni è stato la vittoria per 102–80 contro il CSKA Mosca a Lisbona il 12 gennaio 1995.

Dopo più di un decennio il Benfica ha fatto ritorno nel massimo campionato nella stagione 2008/09, terminando imbattuta la stagione regolare (seconda squadra al mondo a farlo, dopo il Maccabi Tel Aviv negli anni '70), e battendo l'Ovarense 4-0 nella finale.
Dopo questa stagione il club ha ricominciato a dominare nelle competizioni nazionali e ad essere presenza costante nelle coppe europee.
Il Benfica gioca le sue partite casalinghe al Pavilhao Fidelidade che ha una capienza di 2.400 persone.

Sport Lisboa and Benfica, commonly known as Benfica, is based in Lisbon and plays in the Liga Portuguesa de Basquetebol (LPB).
Created in 1927, it is the senior representative of the basketball section of the sports club SL Benfica. In June 2007, the club decided to leave the top professional league, then known as LCB, and join Proliga, a league organized by the Portuguese Basketball Federation. From 2008 onwards, they returned to the LPB after the federation took over the leadership of the competition.
Benfica is the most successful Portuguese club, with the record of multiple championships, cups, league cups, super cups and other national competitions, with a total of 80 national titles. It is also the Portuguese team that went further into the European Club Championship, now known as the Euroleague.
Some of their most memorable moments were the European victories against clubs that won the Euroleague, such as Virtus Bologna, Real Madrid, Cantù, Cibona, Joventut Badalona, Panathinaikos, Partizan, CSKA Moscow or Varese.
Although basketball is not as popular as football among the Portuguese population, Benfica has a great rivalry with FC Porto in this sport, rivalry interrupted from 2012 to 2015.
Along with its numerous youth teams playing in their respective First Division Championships, Benfica also has a basketball team in development, Benfica B, which plays in the Proliga, the second highest series in Portugal after the LPB, where the main team competes.
Formed on March 20, 1927, the basketball team followed in the footsteps of many other sports in the club, almost immediately achieving great success. The team established itself as the main contender in the 1940s and throughout the 1960s it gained the status of the league’s favorite and was already the club with the most titles won. By this time the club had won eight national championships and eight cups.
This dominance declined in the following decade until the early 1980s. In this period of time Benfica has been able to win only two championships, in the 1969/70 and 1974/75 season, but has won four national cups, the second most prestigious Portuguese tournament, in 1969/70, 1971/72, 1972/73 and 1973/74. After these years, Benfica has once again dominated the national scene.
The club’s most successful period was between 1985 and 1995. In eleven seasons, the team has won ten national titles, including seven in a row, five national cups, five league cups and six super cups, obtaining the best season ever of a Portuguese basketball team in 1994-1995 won the Portuguese league, the Portuguese League Cup, the Portuguese Super Cup, the Portuguese Basketball Cup and concluded the Champions Cup in the Top 16.
One of the highlights of that season was the 102-80 victory over CSKA Moscow in Lisbon on 12 January 1995.

After more than a decade, Benfica returned to the top league in the 2008/09 season, finishing unbeaten the regular season (second team in the world to do so, after Maccabi Tel Aviv in the 70s), and beating Ovarense 4-0 in the final.
After this season the club started again to dominate national competitions and to be a constant presence in European cups.
Benfica plays its home games at Pavilhao Fidelidade which has a capacity of 2.400 people.
