La Società Sportiva Basket Napoli ha sede nella città di Napoli ma, fino al 1999, il club giocava a Pozzuoli con il nome di A.P.L. Puteoli.
Non va confusa con la Partenope Napoli Basket, altra importante società napoletana di basket che ora milita in serie B, e con la Napoli Basket, società attiva fino alla stagione 1996/97.
La Libertas Puteoli nasce nel 1946 e nel 1956, con la squadra che milita in Serie C, avviene la fusione con la Fulgor, altra formazione cittadina. Tre anni più tardi la Libertas riparte dal campionato di Prima Divisione lasciando alla Fulgor la conquistata partecipazione alla Serie B. La Fulgor approderà poi in Serie A, l'odierna seconda serie, confluendo con giocatori e allenatore nella Juvecaserta dopo uno spareggio perso per l'accesso alla prima serie nel 1964.
Nel 1992, pur perdendo la finale promozione, acquista i diritti per partecipare al campionato di serie B1.
La stagione 1996/97 vede l'esordio della società nel campionato professionistico di A2: il settimo posto finale permette alla Serapide, questo lo sponsor, di qualificarsi per i play-off promozione dove arriva però l'eliminazione in semifinale.
Il campionato seguente vede invece Pozzuoli piazzarsi all'ultimo posto solitario che avrebbe significato retrocessione in B1, ma il ripescaggio permette alla squadra di rimanere nel professionismo.
La stagione 1998/99 è l'ultima targata Pozzuoli: la squadra si classifica al settimo posto in classifica e viene eliminata nei quarti di finale dei play-off per mano di Trieste.
Prima della stagione 1999/2000 il presidente Lubrano sposta la sede da Pozzuoli a Napoli, cambiando il nome del club in Società Sportiva Basket Napoli, per poi cedere la società all'imprenditore campano Mario Maione.
Questi aumentò il capitale societario e consentì la promozione in Serie A nella stagione 2001/02.
Da ricordare la partecipazione all'ULEB Cup nella stagione 2004/05, la qualificazione per l'Eurolega 2006/2007 e soprattutto la conquista della Coppa Italia nel 2006.
Il 20 settembre 2008 il Consiglio Federale ha annunciato l'esclusione della società partenopea dal campionato di Serie A per la stagione 2008/09, sentenza successivamente confermata in via definitiva. La squadra è stata declassata in Serie C regionale, allo stesso livello della Partenope. Il 12 gennaio 2010, il Basket Napoli di Mario Maione, che nel 2006 vinse la Coppa Italia e nel 2007 fu semifinalista nei play off scudetto, è stato dichiarato fallito. La società era stata estromessa nell'ottobre 2008 dai campionati Fip per falso nelle documentazioni retributive.
La sua eredità è idealmente raccolta nel giugno del 2011 dalla una nuova società Napoli Basket, invitata, tramite il meccanismo della wild card e in breve tempo tornata nel campionato di serie A1.
Le partite casalinghe vengono disputate al PalaBarbuto, intitolato al giornalista sportivo napoletano Lello Barbuto, con una capienza di 5.500 posti.
Fino al 1998 la squadra giocava nel Palazzetto dello sport Mario Argento (pioniere del calcio napoletano), che poteva contenere 8.000 persone ma che, purtroppo, dopo anni di attesa per una ristrutturazione è ormai completamente in disuso.

Società Sportiva Basket Napoli is based in the city of Naples but, until 1999, the club played in Pozzuoli under the name of A.P.L. Puteoli.
It should not be confused with Partenope Napoli Basket, another important Neapolitan basketball club that now plays in Serie B, and with Napoli Basket, a company active until the 1996/97 season.
The Libertas Puteoli was born in 1946 and in 1956, with the team playing in Serie C, it merged with Fulgor, another formation town. Three years later Libertas starts again from the First Division, leaving to Fulgor the conquered participation in the Serie B. Fulgor will then arrive in Serie A, the current second series, joining with players and coach Juvecaserta after a lost playoff for access to the first series in 1964.
In 1992, despite losing the promotion final, the club acquired the rights to participate in the Serie B1 championship.
The 1996/97 season sees the debut of the company in the professional league of A2: the seventh place allows to Serapide, this is the sponsor, to qualify for the promotion play-offs where comes, however, the elimination in the semifinals.
In the following season Pozzuoli is finishing in the last solitary place that would have meant relegation to B1, but the replenishment allows the team to remain in professional level.
The 1998/99 season was the last season of Pozzuoli: the team finished seventh in the standings and was eliminated in the quarter-finals of the playoffs by Trieste.
Before the 1999/2000 season, President Lubrano moved the headquarters from Pozzuoli to Naples, changing the name of the club to Società Sportiva Basket Napoli, and then gave the company to the Campania entrepreneur Mario Maione.
He increased the share capital and allowed promotion to Serie A in the 2001/02 season.
To be remembered the participation in the ULEB Cup in the 2004/05 season, the qualification for the Euroleague 2006/2007 and especially the conquest of the Coppa Italia in 2006.
On 20 September 2008, the Federal Council announced the exclusion of the Neapolitan company from the Serie A championship for the 2008/09 season, which was subsequently confirmed definitively. The team was downgraded to regional Serie C, at the same level as the Partenope. On 12 January 2010, Mario Maione’s Basket Napoli, which won the Italian Cup in 2006 and was a semi-finalist in the Scudetto play-off in 2007, was declared bankrupt. The company was expelled in October 2008 from the FIP championships for false remuneration documentation.
Its legacy is ideally collected in June 2011 by the new company Napoli Basket, invited, through the mechanism of the wild card and soon returned to the A1 series.
The home matches are played at the Palabarbuto, named after the Neapolitan sports journalist Lello Barbuto, with a capacity of 5.500 seats.
Until 1998 the team played in the sports hall Mario Argento (pioneer of Neapolitan football), which could hold 8.000 people but, unfortunately, after years of waiting for a renovation is now completely disused.
