Nel 1881, il club di ginnastica Wodan e il club di scherma Mars, entrambi parte del corpo studentesco Vindicat, si unirono per formare il GSSV Donar. Nel 1951 fu fondato il dipartimento di basket di questo club e nel 1970 il club è stato promosso nella massima serie di basket.
Il Donar è uno dei club tradizionali di prima divisione, poiché è entrato nel campionato 51 anni fa; ha vinto sette volte il campionato nazionale DBL e sei NBB Cups.
Nel 1973 il club si separò da Vindicat e ottenne il suo primo sponsor, Nationale-Nederlanden.
Dal 1986 il Donar è presenza fissa nella massima serie e nel 2010 è diventata la prima squadra di basket olandese a prendere parte ai gironi di qualificazione dell ‘Eurolega.
Disputa le partite interne nel Martini Plaza, che ha una capacità di 4.300 spettatori, ed è la squadra con il maggior numero di tifosi in Olanda.

In 1881, gymnastics club Wodan and fencing club Mars, both part of the student group Vindicat, joined to form the GSSV Donar. In 1951 the basketball department of this club was founded and in 1970 the club was promoted to the top tier of basketball.
Donar is one of the traditional first division clubs, since it entered the league 51 years ago; it has won seven times the national DBL championship and six NBB Cups.
In 1973 the club separated from Vindicat and obtained its first sponsor, Nationale-Nederlanden.
Since 1986, Donar has been a fix presence in the Netherlands top championship and in 2010 became the first Dutch basketball team to take part in the qualifying rounds of the Euroleague.
It plays its home games at Martini Plaza, which has a capacity of 4.300 spectators, and is the team with the largest number of fans in the Netherlands.
