Il nome del club commemora la vittoria della battaglia di Grunwald, combattuta nel 1410 tra polacchi e lituani contro cavalieri teutonici e conosciuta in Lituania come battaglia di Žalgiris.
Ha sede nella città di Kaunas e disputa le proprie partite casalinghe presso la Zalgirio Arena, impianto completato nel 2011 e realizzato per ospitare gli incontri del FIBA Eurobasket 2011.
Il palazzetto (utilizzato tutto l’anno anche per concerti ed eventi di vario tipo) contiene più di 15.000 spettatori per le partite di basket ed è costruito su un’isola del fiume Nemunas.
Il club, in quanto possessore di licenza A pluriennale, gioca regolarmente in Eurolega.
Nasce nel 1944 e nel 1947 per la prima volta vince il Campionato sovietico.
Negli anni '40 e '50 si afferma come una delle realtà più solide del campionato, aggiudicandosi spesso la medaglia d'argento e di bronzo del torneo e per due volte il titolo di campione (1947,1951). In questo arco di tempo solo Dinamo Tbilisi e ASK Riga riescono ad aggiudicarsi più titoli del club di Kaunas (3 ciascuno).
Dominatore del campionato lituano, nel 1988-1989 vince anche una Coppa dei Campioni.
Tra i campioni che hanno militato nella squadra vanno ricordati soprattutto Arvydas Sabonis, Sarunas Jasikevicius (che paradossalmente giocò qui solo l’ultima stagione della sua carriera) e Valdemaras Chomicius.

The club’s name commemorates the victory of the Battle of Grunwald, fought in 1410 between Poles and Lithuanians against Teutonic knights and known in Lithuania as the Battle of Žalgiris.
It is based in the city of Kaunas and plays its home games at the Zalgirio Arena, a facility completed in 2011 and built to host the FIBA Eurobasket 2011 matches.
The arena (used all year round for concerts and events of various types) contains more than 15.000 spectators for basketball games and is built on an island of the Nemunas River.
The club, as a multi-year A licence holder, plays regularly in Euroleague.
It was born in 1944 and won the Soviet Championship for the first time in 1947.
In the '40s and '50s it established itself as one of the most solid realities of the championship, often winning the silver and bronze medal of the tournament and twice the title of champion (1947,1951). In this period of time only Dinamo Tbilisi and ASK Riga manage to win more titles than the club of Kaunas (3 each).
In 1988-1989 he also won a European Cup.
Among the champions who played in the team there are especially Arvydas Sabonis, Sarunas Jasikevicius (who paradoxically only played here the last season of his career) and Valdemaras Chomicius.
