In November of 2017, Federal Communications Commission (FCC) chairman Ajit Pai announced his plans to repeal the policy surrounding net neutrality in the United States. Pai, alongside the majority of the FCC, voted for repeal on December 14, 2017. The rules did not take into effect until June 11, 2018.

Many internet users voiced their opposition to the repeal following the announcement, including the userbase of the Miiverse clone known as Closedverse. While the majority of the Closedverse userbase at the time consisted of teenagers who weren't particularly politically educated, they were still fearful of the change in internet regulation and thus spoke against the repeal. Some users posted memes about the situation, vilifying Ajit Pai as someone who wanted to destroy the internet for money.

Despite the majority of the userbase being against the net neutrality repeal, Closedverse's creator Arian made a post stating that the repeal would not be that big of a deal. However, during late 2017 (prior to the vote), a pop-up was added to Closedverse which had a button to call the US Congress.
