History

Project Community

Cosmic originally began under the name "Project Community". The idea for the clone was given to Term by Sosig. According to its GitHub page, it was "supposed to put an end to the shitty Galaxy Plaza clones", referring to the numerous rehosts of Galaxy Plaza that were made at the time. The main idea of Project Community was that it took feedback from users to influence development. According to Term, it would be the first Miiverse clone to be built on PHP 8.0.

Development began in early August of 2022 with a team that included Term, Bruhdude, and SourMints. As of September 21, 2022, users were able to Yeah and Unyeah posts and edit their profile. Custom badges were also made as of November 2022.

A poll held on September 20, 2022 by Term asked if Project Community should be divided into separate regions, such as the Americas, Europe, and Australia, with users who set their region seeing content from other users of that region. The majority of votes were against the idea.

On February 11, 2023, Term announced that Project Community would no longer be in development.

On June 27, 2023, an Openverse rehost branded as Cosmic was made under cosmic.isledelfino.net. This appears to be a different site compared to the Cosmic that is currently in development. It was initially described as a rehost of Leaper with "a new coat of paint". It initially had broken CSS, but this was eventually fixed.
