Location: Newlands Forest OSM map All Trails
WARNING: Do NOT attempt this route in winter or after rain as it is dangerous when wet. Accidents have happened and hikers have needed to be rescued. After heavy rain in 2024 the dead log lying across the first rock climbing pitch shown in the slideshow has been washed away.
Overview: An interesting alternative to Newlands Ravine, but has some exposed and difficult rock pitches. A rope is recommended for safety. It's not a good route when wet. NB: The head of Els Ravine is below the Knife Edge ridge and should not be confused with the head of Newlands Ravine, which is well below the Knife Edge. Years ago a Scout party had a fatal accident trying to descend Els Ravine thinking it was Newlands Ravine.
The easiest return is via Newlands Ravine. All Trails (use link above) shows a descent route via the Ascension Traverse and down Skeleton Gorge. This makes for a much longer day but their description is useful for finding the start of the ravine off the contour path.
