Suther Peak

Location: Starts at the saddle above Hout Bay that also gives access to Sandy Bay. Coming from Cape Town along the coast road, turn right at the traffic lights at the bottom of the Suikerbossie hill into Helgarde Rd. See OSM map

Continue up going left at the first fork, and eventually you can park on the left before the road ends.

Overview: Suther peak (614.7m) is often tied with Karbonkelberg because it is possible to easily traverse from one to the other via a low saddle which just involves a descent and ascent again. The saddle has a pan after rain - great for a refreshing dip! OSM map of route

Route Description:

Although you can traverse across from Karbonkelberg, the main route up Suther peak starts from the Rocket road above Sandy Bay. From the parking area, walk up the road to the end, and at the Sandy Bay sign bear left to Rocket road.

You can either follow this road until a branch cuts back left, or cross the strip of sand and try to find the start of the path at this lower level. The rest of the route is shown in the slideshow, and the easiest way traverses left around the top cliffs, but the fun way traverses right under the cliffs and into the tunnels and passages.

Suther Pk has 2 summits, the higher is easy, but the lower one with the Trig Beacon on it involves a step across a gap and a 'B' scramble.
