Addiction

You know. You could make a case that THE central problem in human existence is addiction in all its forms. It certainly is a concept that ties together most of the worlds ancient religious traditions as a common concern. If one accepts that one can be addicted to anything from thoughts to substances, from habits to experiences and that even initially adaptive ones can become maladaptive and that such addictions can be personal or pandemic and that people will often go so far as to kill to get their fix and even that addicts can be very easily exploited and often hurt those they love then you can see what I mean when I say that if we can answer this question then we will have made a giant leap forward in human progress. Oh for the Marxists out there, Ive got one word for you. Reification (spellz?)
