The Singapore Scout Association works with National Sailing Centre (NSC) to conduct the following courses periodically on demand.
BRONZE
Goal: To provide Cub Scouts with basic skills necessary to safely enjoy and develop their potential in sailing.
1. Able to swim 50 metres with the aid of life-vest.
2. Attend a lecture on the following topics:
(a) Introduction to sailing
(b) Parts of the Optimist boat
(c) Safety precautions
(d) Rigging / De-rigging
(e) Points of sails
(f) Tacking / Gybing
(g) Heave-to
(h) Capsize demonstration & drill
(i) Basic rules of the sea
(j) Rope work.
(k) Getting out of irons
(l) Weather / Tide / Current
(m) Introduction to Troangles & Sausage course
(n) Launching / Recovery.
SILVER
Goal: To enhance Cub Scout sailors' individual sailing abilities.
Attend a lecture on the following topics:
(a) Rigging / De-rigging
(b) Rope work
(c) Emergencies
(d) Reading the wind
(e) Sail trimming
(f) Short races
(g) Launching / Recovery
GOLD
Goal: To maintain and monitor the sailing history of all Cub Scout sailors.
Attend a lecture on the following topics:
(a) Boat handling
(b) Boat tuning
(c) Racing rules
(d) The elements
(e) Racing / Tactics
(f) Starts / Finishes
A Cub Scout who completes any of the above the courses will receive a certificate and a badge through the Singapore Scout Association.
